GENERATIVE ART WORKSHOP

Randomness, chaos … the first thing usually understood by these terms, in an artistic context, is that they’re ideas without co-ordination, confused, meaningless …

Therefore, these terms need to be clarified, along with their potential application to artistic creativity.

The generative methodology may be described as applying principals of action and rules to set in motion the generation  of a new and unpredictable artistic content from elements intended to function as symbols, with the intention of excluding and/or substituting the individual’s free will and the artist’s aesthetic decisions.

The workshop will introduce the participants to generative techniques, historical analysis of the first works of artistic creation, as well as to examples to be found in nature, while also looking into complex system theories, information and network theories, evolution theories, etc. Themes, such as automation versus artificial intelligence, or the absence of the latter will also be dealt with and, languages and computer environments for applying the techniques presented will also be explored.

This workshop will be given by the artist Roc Jiménez de Cisneros. This Barcelona musician works in the field of algorithmic composition. His work has been released on internationally acclaimed record labels, such as Mego, Scarcelight, Lucky Kitchen, Diskono, Antifrost and Fals.ch. He is also involved in the EVOL project, a computer music cell started in Barcelona in 1996 and, within this framework, has collaborated with artists including Jakob Draminsky H, Joe Gilmore, Jim Brouwer, Ana María Ramos, Andrew Davies y Joel Ongthorne.
