Fourth research and development grant at the Hangar Interaction Lab

Hangar, the visual arts production and research centre in Barcelona, is calling for three grants for artists, researchers and developers in the field of open source technology to carry out a three-month research, development and/or production residency in its Interaction Laboratory.

About Hangar’s Interaction Lab

Hangar is involved in the development of custom hardware for artistic projects from a commitment to hardware and free software. Through the Interaction Laboratory, Hangar can develop all types of hardware for artistic projects that require it, including development of internal electronics, programming and prototype construction. Some examples of applications are: real-time interaction, synchronizations, mechanisms, automations and remote controls. In addition, the Laboratory develops a series of royalty-free tools available to artistic projects that may need them.

1. Objectives

General:
– Assist creators in their research and/or production activities, their experimental work and the development and completion of their projects.
– Detect and encourage the generation of communities around new tools and/or technologies.

Specific:
– Tp propitiate and facilitate the necessary resources for experimentation, research, development and creation in the field of open interactive technology.
– To promote documentation, publication, dissemination, transfer and exchange of knowledge in the field of creation with open interactive technology.

2. Who it is aimed at and project requirements

– Artists, researchers and developers of any age and nationality who work in the field of creation with open technology.
The call will consider projects that require a research, development, prototyping or production phase in Hangar’s Interaction Laboratory.

3. Duration

The duration of the three grants is 3 consecutive months between July 1 and December 31, 2019. The 3 months will be established by mutual agreement between Hangar and the selected person within those dates.

4. Conditions

a. The application must be submitted via email to miguel(at)hangar.org.
b. Each person may apply with only one project.
c. The project will have to be carried out mainly within the Hangar Interaction Laboratory.
d. Hangar will make available to the beneficiary:
– Fees: 1500 € gross.
– A production bag of up to 2000 € gross.
– Work space in the Hangar Interaction Laboratory.
– Technical support for the development and production of the project.
– Hangar’s network of collaborators.

* IMPORTANT: This grant does not offer accommodation or a mobility bag.

5. Commitments of the selected project with Hangar

– Participate in the dynamization of Open Thursdays, offering another creators free technical support.
– Make a presentation of the project during the period of residence in Hangar in the framework of Paratext.
– Carry out an open and free workshop on the tools used for the development of the project.
– Deliver a final report of the project and an assessment of the residence during the two months after its completion.
– Include the Hangar logo in the communication of the project.

** Open Thursdays are weekly meetings open to artists, creators and developers from different disciplines of electronic art who want to work with hardware tools and free software. Attendance is always free and free, and allows participants to meet with technological experts in free and collective tools with which to collaborate and share resources to develop projects.

6. Selection procedure ***

The request will be made in a pdf or doc file -preferably pdf- with the fields required below to miguel(at)hangar.org. Proposals will be received until June 17, 2019 (GMT +1).

*** IMPORTANT:

– Applications that do not include the required information and/or exceed the extension limits will not be accepted.
– The Selection Committee may contact the persons shortlisted for an interview.
– In the calendar and work plan section, approximately the three months chosen for the completion of the project between 1 July and 31 December 2019 must be indicated and the presence in the Hangar Interaction Laboratory during this period must be indicated.

7. Selection Committee

The Selection Committee shall consist of:
– Two members of the Hangar Programme Commission.
– Miguel Angel de Heras, responsible for the Hangar Interaction Laboratory.

8. Valuation criteria

The Selection Committee will evaluate the projects according to:
– Background of the applicant.
– Continued presence within the Interaction Laboratory.
– The fit of the proposal with the lines of work of Hangar and the Interaction Laboratory itself.
– The viability and potential of the development of the project in Hangar.
– The quality, relevance and interest of the project.
– The technical training and the degree of self-sufficiency of the applicant.
– The capacity of the project to open and share its development process with the communities surrounding Hangar.

9. Calendar

– Deadline for applications: 17 June 2019 at 00:00 (GMT +1).
– Results of the selection process: second half of June 2019.
– Residence period: starting and ending in 2019. To be confirmed with Hangar.
