Hangar is a centre for arts production and research, offering support to artists.
Hangar’s activities aim to create the best possible context for the production of art projects, based on their specific needs.
The centre offers a series of services and a framework within which research and development for art productions –in their entirety, or partially- is made possible. Hangar also accompanies the results by including them in networks and platforms, or by detecting possibilities for their incorporation in other fields.
An independent team hired by the Foundation runs the centre’s daily management.
There is a programme committee in Hangar, made up of five experts in the field of the visual and interdisciplinary arts, which is in charge of the centre’s art direction. This committee is renewed every two years, and chosen by the board of the Foundation.
4. For whom
Hangar is for artists, critics, theorists, mediators, cultural managers, and national or international curators, regardless of the stage of their professional career they are in, who need space and access to expertise for the development of any of the phases in the production process of their art project.
Hangar opened in June 1997. Since then, it has maintained its activities running daily throughout the year.
Hangar’s headquarters are in an industrial building in the Poblenou neighbourhood that was loaned by the Barcelona City Council. The building has an overall surface of 1800 m2, and is host to 15 individual artists’ studios, video, imaging and interactivity labs; two sound stage, equipment rental services, technical assistance, and advice and follow-up of art productions.
In 2010, Hangar entered a phase of expansion and renovation. The centre has expanded to two adjacent industrial warehouses and a third building, which was originally the site’s guard’s house. One of the warehouses is used as a multi-purpose space and professional sound stage, whilst the other hosts all of Hangar痴 workshops, events, etc., revolving around specific skills and technologies. The old guard house is nowadays a residency for up to four international artists.
Hangar is an independent project, funded by:
Regional Government of Catalonia
Barcelona City Council
Ministry of Culture
Barcelona Provincial Council
Banc Sabadell Foundation
These contributions make it possible for Hangar to offer its services to artists at affordable prices.
The centre’s annual budget for 2011 was 596.539€.
