Beatbox by Diego Paonesa
The installation “Beatbox” by the artist Diego Paonesa has been developed for the exhibition programme BCN Producció’12 and exhibited in the Espai CUB in La Capella, Barcelona.
The piece uses a tetrahedron as a support for a system of percussion. Small devises beat on its sides following synchronously a nonstop scheduled and carefully created, complex rhythm. The installation consists of 6 small machines. Each has 8 percussive elements, which hit hard onto the surface. PLCs are perfectly synchronized to each other so each one acts on one of the sides of the cube. The basic electronics have been developed from the use of solenoids and control elements from the platform Arduino. The communucation works via an automatic machine, called master. The master sends data to other automatic machines using I2C protocol to reproduce perfectly synchronized patterns.
