Open call for three residencies at the collaboratory Prototyp_ome

prototitome

0. Summary

Prototyp_ome is a collaboratory composed by Hangar (Barcelona), the Barcelona Biomedical Research Park (PRBB), DiYBioBarcelona, Faboratory (Barcelona) and Pechblenda (Calafou, Anoia).

The collaboratory aims to re-visit, re-think, co-design and co-develop processes, tools and technologies for biological exploration, from a feminist perspective and focusing on low cost diagnosis for health self-management.

The open residencies programme of Prototyp_ome consists of three intensive two weeks meetings among hackers, artists, makers, grassroots collectives, citizens and scientists to rethink, research and develop processes, technologies and tools for biological exploration, particularly applied to health diagnosis.

The objectives of the programme are, first, to obtain replicable, understandable and easy to use prototypes, which may eventually have the format of an artistic production, involving grassroots collectives and citizens in their design and development. On the other hand, it is intended that the selected projects contribute to the generation of critical mass on the pre-existing processes and tools in the field of biological research; to open the possibility of re-thinking them and designing them from the point of view and according to the needs of artists, users, makers, and scientists; and to promote this way the transfer of knowledge and the empowerment of the collective involved.

The call is addressed to projects in the field of creation with opensource technology that work on health prevention, treatment and diagnosis from an explicitly feminist and DIY / DIWO perspective, and aim to contribute to re-visit, re- think, co-design and co-develop processes, tools and technologies for biological exploration.

The themes are included in three main areas:

– Tools and techniques (eg.: ultrasound, electrostimulation, to rethink the materiality of the speculum, lowcost test, HPV mobile laboratory, male contraception, etc.)
– Software & databases (eg.: apps & / or laboratory diagnosis, digital security for pro-abortion activists, mapping medical protocols related to prostate, incontinence, etc.),
– Performative narratives (p.ej.: historical decolonisation of tools and medical procedures, experiences of diagnosis and prevention, self-defense techniques against obstetric and gynecological violence, vasectomy, etc.).

The three selected projects will have the support and infrastructure of the different members of the collaboratory, plus fees, accommodation and a production and travel grant.

Each of the selected project will have open call for collaborators.

1. Description of the nodes of the collaboratory

Hangar, center for art research and production (Barcelona)

Hangar is a centre for art research and production, offering support to artists.
Hangar’s mission is to support the visual artists and creators during the different phases of their art production processes as well as to contribute to the best development of their projects.

Barcelona Biomedical Research Park

The Barcelona Biomedical Research Park is a big scientific infrastructure, next to the Hospital del Mar in Barcelona, which brings together seven independent public research centers but closely coordinated. The park was opened in May 2006 and it is an initiative of the Government of Catalonia, the Barcelona City Council and the Pompeu Fabra University.

DiYBioBarcelona (Barcelona)

DIYBioBarcelona is a project established in 2014 with the aim of providing the means so the local biohacker/biomaker community can have a meeting place, exchange ideas and develop projects.

DIYBioBarcelona will provide to the residents a wetlab, which includes different tools for working on molecular biology, genetics and microbiology.

DiYBioBarcelona is a project in residence at Hangar since early 2016.

Faboratory / ilaro.org (Barcelona)

Faboratory / ilaro.org is a platform for the development and diffusion of technologies for digital manufacturing. Its activities include research, development of internal and external projects, and dissemination (documentation of designs, workshops, lectures, etc).
Faboratory / Ilaro.org is a project in residence at Hangar since 2012.

Pechblenda lab (Calafou, Anoia)

Pechblenda 2.0 Hardlab TransHackFeminist, lab0rat0ry experimentati0n bi0- electr0 -chemistry. Since 2013 they carry out independent research, prototypes DIWO, performance, noise, workshops and events. They are part of networks such as HAckteria and from the lab also emerge specific tentacles as gynepunk, a laboratory for radical self-managed ginecology.

In 2015 the residence by Pechblenda EXOglands radical dynamics: fluid, tissues & bloody self-aware enhancement bionicLAB   enhancement in Hangar, generated the right context for the genesis of the collaboratory Prototyp_ome.

2. Who can apply

Researchers, artists, developers, hackers and members of collectives of all ages and nationalities, working from a critical and activist point of view, considering the perspective of sex / gender, class and geopolitics, in the field of creation, empowerment and bioexploration with practical, open and hackable technologies.

3. Requirements for projects

We will specially consider projects with focus on low cost diagnosis for health self-management, that involve grassroots collective and citizens in their design, development and testing processes, and have the ability to generate critical mass.

The project must consider the participation of collaborators during their stay at the collaboratory. The collaborators will selected via an open call that will launched once the project has been selected.

The project will be licensed open (free software / hardware) and documented and published in accordance with this philosophy.

4. Infrastructure available for selected projects

Hangar

Hangar has several laboratories for artistic experimentation and research. Each laboratory has one or more specialised technicians. These laboratories are:
– Interaction laboratory:
