Open call for the second edition of the Exchange grant between Hangar and Casa de Velázquez

Hangar and Casa de Velázquez have signed an agreement for the development of a residency program, whose objective is to provide artists with the opportunity to learn about other artistic and cultural environments, to produce and confront their works with those of others and to expand their artistic curriculum. Within the framework of this program, three artists residing in Catalonia will remain in the Casa de Velázquez in Madrid (one artist in the mode of residence of production and two artists in the modality of residence of research) and a French artist / to realize a residence of production in Hangar (Barcelona). The two artists selected for the two research fellowships will also have the opportunity to work together with a researcher in residence at Casa de Velázquez.

About Casa de Velázquez
Casa de Velázquez is, at the same time, a center of artistic creation and a research center. This is what constitutes its singularity in the group of five French Schools abroad under the tutelage of the Ministry of Higher Education and Research: the French School of Athens, the French School of Rome, the French Institute of Oriental Archeology of Cairo and the French School of the Middle East. Since its founding in 1928, the Casa has been the subject of jointly hosting artists of the French Academy in Madrid and researchers in the framework of the School of Higher Hispanic and Iberian Studies (EHEHI).
The House of Velázquez has the mission of developing creative activities and research related to the arts, languages, literature and societies of the Iberian, Latin American and Maghreb countries. It also has the vocation to contribute to the training of artists, researchers and teachers-researchers, as well as to participate in the development of artistic and scientific exchanges between France and related countries.

About Hangar

Hangar is an open center for art research and production that supports creators and artists. Hangar’s mission is to support creators in all phases of the visual arts production process, and contribute to the best achievement of each of their projects. To do this, all its services are focused on facilitating the access of artists to the necessary material and technical resources, and providing a context of experimentation, research and free transfer of knowledge.

The center offers a context and services that enable the research and development of artistic productions in a partial or integral way, and accompanies their results by including them in various networks and platforms or the detection of the possibilities of their anchoring in other sectors.

1. Purpose of this call and its addressees

The objective of this call is twofold:

To promote the mobility of Catalan and French resident artists in order to facilitate artistic production through two grants in the form of production: one from Hangar (Barcelona) to the House of Velázquez in Madrid for an artist that will last two months; and a second one, from a French artist to Hangar, which will last four months.

• To promote the meeting of artists with other areas of research. Two research grants are offered for two months each, to facilitate the exchange of research between artists resident in Catalonia and researchers from the EHEHI of the Casa de Velázquez in Madrid.

• Participation in this competition is open to artists residing in Catalonia and French artists who develop proposals in the field of contemporary art, performance, sound art, visual arts, audiovisual, new media, etc.

2. Period of residence, benefits and grant
The residences of the artists residing in Catalonia in the Casa de Velázquez in Madrid will last for two consecutive months and will be held between January and November of 2018.

A. Research residency (2 artists / 2 months each)
Length of stay: two months for each artist, to be held in January and February 2018.
It includes:
1. Free accommodation for each artist for two months at Casa de Velázquez.
2. Free access to the collective workshops at Casa de Velázquez: engraving, sculpture / painting, sound and analog photography at Casa de Velázquez.
3. Access to the library.
4. Working together with researchers members of the Casa de Velázquez. The results of the collaboration will be specified in a publication for each exchange. The period of residence in Madrid will focus on the production of the materials and the edition of the publication.
5. Support for the production of the publication: € 600 gross per trade (€ 1200 total gross, of which Hangar will contribute € 700 gross, and Casa de Velázquez with € 500 gross).
6. The publication will be presented in the following editions of ArsLibris in SantaMónica (Barcelona) and ARCO (Madrid).
7. Each artist receives from the Fundació Privada AAVC – Hangar an economic endowment for maintenance expenses, for a value of € 750 gross per month (Total € 1,500 gross) per artist.
8. Hangar covers the cost of travel back and forth from the place of origin to Madrid for a maximum amount of 150 € each.

B. Production residency (1 artist / 2 months)
Length of stay: two months, in October and November of 2018.
It includes:
1. Accommodation for two months at the Casa de Velázquez.
2. Free access to the collective workshops: engraving, sculpture / painting, sound and analog photography at Casa de Velázquez.
3. The artist receives from the Private Foundation AAVC – Hangar an economic endowment for maintenance expenses, for a value of € 750 gross per month (Total € 1,500 gross).
4. Production support worth up to € 1000 gross, which includes the Barcelona-Madríd round trip.
5. The production grant will end with an exhibition of the pieces produced at the Open Doors of the Casa de Velázquez in 2019.

The residence of the French artist in Hangar (Barcelona) will take place during four consecutive months between January and April 2018, with the following conditions:
1. Accommodation from January to April 2018 in Hangar.
2. Work space in Hangar.
3. Access to technical advice.
4. Accompaniment and integration in the artistic sector.
5. Hosting the project on the web.
6. Access to all Hangar laboratories, subject to availability.
7. Equipment and experimental spaces, depending on availability.
8. Assistance in production of work.
9. The artist receives from Casa Velázquez a monthly financial allowance for maintenance and production costs of € 750 gross.
10. Casa de Velázquez covers the cost of travel back and forth from the place of origin to Barcelona for a maximum amount of € 250.
11. The artist must report regularly on the progress of his project (once a month) to the study director of Casa de Velázquez.
12. At the end of his residence in Hangar, the artist will travel to Madrid to make a presentation of his project at Casa de Velázquez, according to the conditions agreed upon during the process of realization between the artist and the art studies director of the House of Velázquez. The House of Velázquez will take care of the lodging and the displacement of the artist.

Deadline for applications
The deadline for receipt of applications is until November 10, 2017.

Pre-selection and final selection process
1. The selection of artists will be made through this public call.
2. Hangar Programme Commission will preselect 7 candidates for residences in Casa de Velázquez (3 production and 4 research). Hangar will send the documentation of the shortlisted candidates, with their corresponding portfolios and resumes to Casa de Velázquez, who will make the final selection.
3. For research residencies, each artist will have to choose, from the list proposed by Casa de Velázquez at the end of this document, a researcher in residence with whom to work together.
4. For the French artist, the House of Velázquez will present a pre-selection of at least 3 candidates to the Program Commission of Hangar, who will proceed to the final selection.

Results presentation

The artists selected will undertake a presentation of the results of their residency in Madrid and one in Barcelona, ​​within the framework of one of the public activities that each receiving center proposes.

Evaluation criteria

It will be valued:

The interest of the proposal according to the lines of work of each of the centers of residence.

The capacity of the project to solve the theme it raises.

A realistic assessment of the time and the adequacy of project objectives to the context and resources of the participating centers.
Acceptance of the rules and decision of the jury

The participation in this contest entails the acceptance of the bases and the resolution of the jury, as well as of the changes that, as a consequence of factors beyond the centers can be produced later.
