Third research and development grant at the Hangar Interaction and Software Lab

Hangar, the visual arts production and research centre based in Barcelona, has opened a call for applications for three grants for artists, researchers and developers in the field of open source technology to carry out a three-month research, development and/or production residency in its interaction laboratory.

About Hangar’s Interaction Lab

Hangar is involved in the development of custom hardware for artistic projects from a commitment to hardware and free software. 
Through the Interaction Laboratory, Hangar can develop all types of hardware for artistic projects that require it, including development of internal electronics, programming and prototyping. Some examples of applications are: real-time interactions, synchronizations, mechanisms, automations and remote controls.
 The Laboratory also develops a series of tools free of rights, available for artistic projects that may require them.

1. Objectives


The main objectives of the grant are, on the one hand, to assist the creators in their research and/or production activities, in their experimental work and in the development and completion of their projects. The second of the objectives is to detect and encourage the generation of communities around new tools and/or technologies.


To provide and facilitate the necessary resources for experimentation, research, development and creation in the field of open interactive technology.

To promote the documentation, publication, dissemination, transfer and exchange of knowledge in the field of creation with open interactive technology.

2. Who it is aimed at and project requirements

Artists, researchers and developers of any age and nationality working in the field of open technology creation.

The call will consider projects that require a research, development, prototyping or production phase in the Hangar interaction laboratory.

3. Duration

The duration of the grant is three consecutive months throughout 2018. The specific dates will be established by mutual agreement between Hangar and the candidate of the selected project.

4. Conditions

1. The application must be submitted using the online form.
2. Each candidate can apply for the call with only one project.
3. Hangar will make available to the beneficiary:

– Fees: 1500€ gross.
– A production bag of up to 2000€ gross.
– Workspace in Hangar’s interaction laboratory.
– Technical support for the development and production of the project.
– Hangar’s network of collaborators.

* IMPORTANT: This grant does not offer accommodation or a mobility bag.

5. Commitments of the selected project with Hangar

– To participate in the dynamization of the Open Thursdays**, attending to other creators and offering them free technical support.
– Make a presentation of the project during the period of residence in Hangar.
– To carry out an open and free workshop about the tools used for the development of the project.
– Submit a final report on the project and an assessment of the residence within two months of its completion.
– Include the Hangar logo in the project communication.

** Open Thursdays are weekly meetings open to artists, creators and developers from different electronic art disciplines who want to work with free hardware and software tools. Attendance is always free, and allows participants to meet technological experts in free and collective tools with whom to collaborate and share resources to develop projects.

The selection committee may contact the pre-selected candidates for an interview.

7. Selection Committee

The selection committee shall be composed of:

– Two members of the Hangar Program Commission.
– Miguel Angel de Heras, head of the Hangar interaction laboratory.

8. Assessment criteria

The selection committee will evaluate the projects according to:
– Background of the applicant.
– The fit of the proposal with the lines of work of Hangar and the interaction laboratory itself.
– The viability and potential of the project development in Hangar.
– The quality, relevance and interest of the project.
– The technical training and degree of self-sufficiency of the artist or developer
– The project’s ability to open and share its development process with the communities around Hangar.

9. Calendar of Events

– Deadline for applications: 15 September 2018 at 00:00 h (GMT +1).
– Results of the selection process: second half of September 2018.
– Residence: during the year 2018. To be arranged with Hangar.
