The more of us, workshop by Janez Janša

Who are Janez Janša?

In 2007, Janez Janša, Janez Janša and Janez Janša decide to legally change their names into the name of the Prime Minister of Slovenia at that time (and now), the controversial right-wing nationalist Janez Janša. Since then both their private life and public projects are carried out under that name.

In a few months Janez Janša, Janez Janša and Janez Janša receive their ID cards, passports, birth certificates, driving licences and, of course, credit cards.

In the same year, Janez Janša’s wedding is celebrated: the witnesses are Janez Janša and Janez Janša.

In 2010, they auction their passports as art objects. A famous philosopher accuses them of fascism.

In 2012, the movie “My Name is Janez Janša” has its premiere. Journalists and political party supporters of Prime Minister publicly insult to the authors. A newspaper accuses them of pornography (?!).

“In a way, I am in a permanent reality show of sorts, since the change of name brings with it an additional fictionalization – a parallel reality of sorts. And reality resists the prospect of this parallel reality becoming part of it”.

Starting points for the workshop:

After presenting the key moments in the project, we will discuss with Janez Janša the basic elements of the project strategy and tactical decisions.

We will study the possibilities of artistic intervention through improper names: anonymity, pseudonimity, multiple identities and collective identities. We will compare cases and brainstorm about possible scenarios, discarded ideas and developments.

With Janez we’ll discuss the construction of different narratives of the project, such as a newly released documentary in Slovenia that will soon be distributed in other countries. We will leave the discussion open so that participants can play to imagine new project developments.

Finally, for those interested, we will talk with Janez about the projects by participants themselves.
