Documenting resistances. Collective struggles and social movements in documentary cinema

Beyond the evident link with current affairs and even with a certain type of audiovisual journalism, documentary cinema has, throughout its history, approached the collective struggles with which it has shared time and space. Not only it has been the narrator of different conflicts between what we call “power” and those who question its hegemony, but it has occasionally acted as a catalyst, promoter or “media arm” of some social demands.

OBJECTIVES

The aim of the workshop is, on the one hand, to make a journey as exhaustive as possible on the historical link between non-fiction and collective struggles. In that sense, we will devote the first half to explaining through viewing and analysis what the milestones in this relationship are, from the 1911 short film “A day in the life of a coal miner” to more recent documentaries that have portrayed movements such as the “Black Lives Matter” or the 15-M.

In this way we will observe common patterns, aesthetic classifications and formal resources of the documentary. We will also see how technical limitations have conditioned the evolution of the genre and how the absence of these and the change in the communicative paradigm have contributed to a hyper-popularization of the audiovisual documentary.

On the other hand, we will dedicate the second half of the workshop to an in-depth analysis of several closer and independent cases, in which we will study how the creation process has been, from its scriptwriting and production to its final distribution. In this part we will have part of the team of some of these examples.

THEORETICAL CONTENTS

The first references
Historical review of the first processes of documentation of collective struggles, going through the propaganda documentary of the 30s and 40s, but focusing especially on the explosion of gender in the 60s and 70s in the heat of counter-cultural movements in Europe and the USA, as well as trade union struggles.

The Latin American current
Latin America deserves its own space in this workshop, we will review the countless examples that have given voice to large and small revolutions and that have illustrated the desire for change of the continent.

The resurgence of the documentary in the digital revolution
With the emergence of digital video and the so-called “democratization of technologies” non-fiction found a vein that is exploiting to this day. The 21st century is being prolific in the creation of documentaries and the processes of audiovisual monitoring of collective struggles form a sub-genre of their own.

CALENDAR

Session 1: Theoretical contents and projections of different fragments of documentary references. Analysis of common and specific formal aspects of the genre.

Session 2: Theoretical content, projections and pre-production simulation and scripting of a documentary such as those previously analysed.

Session 3: Practical session with several real examples, possibility of incorporating projects of the assistants to the workshop, and analysis of the process of realization and montage of “Libre te quiero”, by Martín-Patino, with the editor of the documentary.
