Resultats convocatòria Encura II per dues residències de recerca curatorial a Hangar

The call for the Encura II residency in Hangar received 105 applications, 84 of them valid from 39 countries.

A jury composed of the comittee board of Hangar Barcelona: Tere Badia, Director; Mireia Sallarès, artist; Pep Dardanyà, artist; and comittee board of Curators´ Network: Anca Mihulet, independent curator; Borbàla Szalai, independent curator; Flavia Introzzi andGeorg Zolchow (hablarenarte), evaluated the applications for the two research residency at Hangar Barcelona.

After a long deliberation, the selection committee announced, “Chemtrails” by Manuela Pedrón Nicolau & Jaime González Cela, and “Smuggling as an alternative” by Maykson Cardoso, chosen as future residents of our joint call for two curatorial research residencies with Hangar.

“Chemtrails” by Manuela Pedrón Nicolau & Jaime González Cela is a curatorial project focused on the Narrative in Contemporary Art, and particularly on the popular culture ways of telling. By working with artists in residency at Hangar on the basis of rumour and legend’s creation and its viral dissemination, they will produce a common project in the format of a multiform anthology of tales. The aim of this narrative experiment is delving into the links between art, literature and experience through hybrid formats.

“Hecha la ley, hecha la trampa” or “Smuggling as an alternative”, a project by Maykson Cardoso in collaboration with Olivia Ardui, proposes to experiment smuggling as a strategy of exhibition making. During the residency, a possible relation between art and crime or contemporary art as artifact to avoid controlling devices, especially at borders, will be researched and taken to action. This residency will result in at least two international exhibitions – one in Catalonia, another in Brazil – and will generate collaborative actions amongst agents invited to think together about unfolding this strategy of “crooks”.

Curatorial collective Manuela Pedrón Nicolau – Jaime González Cela (Madrid, Spain) and Maykson Cardoso (Rio de Janeiro, Brazil) will complete a curatorial research residency at Hangar during a month-long period, taking place between November 2016 and February 2017. The curators will work on and develop their projects together with the artists in residency at Hangar’s studio spaces.

The runner-ups of the Encura II open call are:

“Espiritismo” by Padraic E. Moore (Netherlands, Amsterdam) and “The Wanderer” by Elise Lammer (Germany, Berlin). The jury mentioned especially the interesting proposals and the high technical standards of the two applications.

Besides the already mentioned, the comittee also preselected the proposals of Karina Kottova + Piotr Sikora, Marta Álvarez Guillén, Carlos Fernandez Pello, Cinthya García Leyva, Kris Dittel, Anna-Maria Hällgren, Luce Choules, Jennifer Burris, Mika Conradie, Cornelia Lein, Laura Cecilia Caraballo, Cristina Navarro, Aviya Cohen, Sarah Kazmi, Mario D’Souza, Mariam Natroshvili, Lisa Bensel, Iryna Kostyshyna, and Franz Thalmair.

We sincerely thank all participants of the call and wish the selected candidates all the best for their residency at Hangar Barcelona.
