Julia Varela

Short term residency

May - July 2018

Julia Varela. Madrid, 1986

One of Julia’s interests is related to what we repress when we see. Part of materials that allow you to preserve the physical staging in which to run and mediatize emotions. The works she proposes are performances that, if they do not become objects, they disappear. She departs from oral testimonies, translations, ephemeral events and electronic or waste materials to disseminate the environment surrounding a subject or community.

The means of production, reception and circulation of images turn suffering into an element of domestic, speculative entertainment. Part of her work stages how our physical interaction with devices tames our understanding of context, desire, ideals and human rights. She studies the operative images and the relationship between desire and nihilism.

Julia is part of the Critical Images research program in Kungl. Konsthögskolan (Royal Institute of Art) Stockholm, Sweden (2017/2018). She has a degree in Fine Arts and has completed an MA of Arts (Sculpture) at the Royal College of Art London.

Her work has been included in exhibitions such as Royal Institute of Art, Stockholm (2018); ResArtis Project Space, Melbourne, Australia (2018); KIASMA Museum of Contemporary Art, Helsinki, Finland; Kunstverein am Rosa-Luxemburg-Platz, Berlin (2016); Ryder Projects, London (2016); Pinsent Masons LLP London (2016); Copperfield Gallery, London (2016); La Casa Encendida, Madrid; HQS Wellington (2015); Camden Arts Center London (2015), CUL DE SAC Gallery London, among others.

She has received grants such as, Ayudas a la Creación de Artes Visuales 2017 (Comunidad de Madrid); XXVIII Circuitos de Artes Plásticas de la Comunidad de Madrid 2017; GENERACIONES 2016, Fundación MonteMadrid and La Casa Encendida; The Venice Biennale Trip Grant (The Royal College of Art London) 2015.
