Interactive Systems Workshop: Artificial Vision with C ++ and OpenFrameworks


The performance with interactive systems describes a hybrid art form that combines performing arts, video art, installation and interactivity, from where new philosophical questions about the virtual body emerge, the scenario increased and the transformation of the spectator’s role. Applied to the body, artificial vision technologies allow the perception, interpretation and amplification of gestures and body movements, making possible the creation of interactive works that establish meaningful dialogues between machines and moving bodies.

This workshop has the objective to provide participants with the technical and conceptual tools to design and build an interactive system based on the artificial vision, able to perceive the movements of the body and to control audiovisual events in real time.
We will analyze the evolution of the thought around the relation between body, machines and performativity and study technical aspects of the interactive audiovisual systems and their specific applications in the scenographic space. We will learn to program in C ++ using openFrameworks, a free and flexible programming environment with the objective of developing interactive installations capable of performing complex audiovisual operations in real time.

Using an approach based on prototipos, the participants practice how to apply “computer thought” on body art in movement by constructing collective and individual projects in which programmers with or without experience, designers and performance artists can work together.

The class will end in a collective exposition and evaluation of the students’ work, which can be special computer applications, interactive installations or performances.


– Analyze the technical context and aesthetics of interactive applications on body performances.
– Develop programming knowledge with specialization on artificial vision using the language C ++ and openFrameworks .
– Design a significant performance and build the prototype of an interactive system controlled with gestures and movements.

Contents of the course:

– Study of the evolution in the relationship between body, machines and performativity, treating historical references from Descartes, the idea of ​​the total work of art, the phenomenology and cognition with the body, to the current paradigms of virtual reality and immersive systems. Introduction to the history of computerized vision and its relationship with the arts. Theoretical analysis on the work of Johannes Bringer, Paul Virilio, Gilles Deleuze, Brenda Laurel, Donna Haraway, Walter Benjamin, Seymour Papert, and otros.
– Tecnical analysis of an interactive installation: sizing, disposal of lights, audiovisual systems and chambers. General vision of software and hardware to capture images and control various synchronized projects.
– Introduction to programming in C ++ and the structure of a project on the environment openFrameworks. Familiarization with the development environments Xcode Development Bank and Code :: Blocks. Objects, methods, data and operations, control structures, arrays. Basic Operations, generation of graphics 2D and 3D and multimedia control.
– Studies on computer vision: Methods for acquiring and processing camcorder images: Detection of contours, faces, color, movement and the recognition of objetos. Methods for acquiring and processing video images: detection of contours, faces colors, movements, recognition of objects. Methods to acquire and process data from depth sensores like Kinect or Leap Motion and systems of movements capturing. Detection of users, movements and contours.- Development of applications for computer vision for openFrameworks using ofxCv and OpenCV, and ofxKinect ofxOpenNI for the detection of structure and depth, and ofxFaceTracker for the understanding of faces.
– Studies on interactivity. Design methods of interactive experience based on the body. Test to evaluate the qualities of an interactive experience. Construction of interactive system prototypes controles in real time by gestures and body movements.- Desarrollo de aplicaciones de visión por computadora para openFrameworks usando ofxCv y OpenCV, ofxKinect y ofxOpenNI para detección de esqueleto y profundidad, y ofxFaceTracker para entender rostros.

All participants will have the opportunity to show the results of their work at the end of the course.

No previous experience required.

Addressed to: dancers, performers, actors, choreographers, computer scientists, set designers, architects, publicists, visual artists, educators and related disciplines.

Participants are invited to bring ideas of related projects to be developed during the course.
