Brooke Borg

New York, 1982

Period of residence: March – April 2010

My work investigates interpersonal relationships and the languages we create in order to communicate.  Combining drawing, text and performance, I explore the visual, verbal and felt senses to understand our emotional experiences. My multi-disciplinary projects present memory, the poetics of the fragment, hand-written stream of consciousness and exaggerated contrasts of light and shadow.

After graduating from Bard College in New York State with degrees in Art History and Latin American Iberian Studies, I moved home to my native Long Island, and after a year and a half of bartending and waiting tables I bought a one-way ticket to Barcelona.  In the six years I lived there, I fronted an all-male ukulele band, performed my choreography on the world-renowned stage of Palau de la Musica Catalana, was a regular guest on two major talk-radio programs on art and culture, and received my Masters degree in Fine Arts from the University of Barcelona.

I returned to New York in 2012.  I fuse my own art practice with community building and process-based learning. I am currently an Artist in Residence with ArtWorks, the Naomi Cohain Foundation, and am co-founder of Diglosis, a collaborative art work-study program for local teens.  When not making things alone or with NYC youth, I am likely performing with the femme fatale rock performance collective HUFF THIS! at venues in Brooklyn and Manhattan.
