Élène Tremblay
Montreal, Canada
Period of residence: Printemps 2007
Élène Tremblay works with photography, video and installation. Her artistic work revolves around a series of recurrent questions: the contact in the simulation, the vulnerable and semi-pathetic body in its fixed position, the call to the viewer’s empathy and the theatricalisation of the viewer’s sight.
Tremblay has a Fine Arts degree and a doctorate in Studies and Practices of Art in the Québec University (Montreal). From the first years of her career, she published many texts, was awarded with many prices and grants and took part in many residence programs. She has done many web art projects and has taken part in many solo and collective exhibitions in many countries in Europe, Canada and United States. Her artwork is part of many collections: Musée du Québec, Centre for Photography at Woodstok (New York), Montreal University and the Fondation Découverte (Quebec).
Her photographic projects reveal many functions and paradoxes of the discipline (document, menmonic tool, fiction, etc.). For her video projects, Tremblay understands this media as a fix shot that contains a practically motionless image. In her videos, she treats the movement with parsimony, always relating an immobile human being with a moving world, amplifying the effects of the pain and suffering experiences. This way, she makes possible the viewer’s empathy and the recuperation of the concept of “Simulation”.
