Paratext #64 with Ivonne Villamil, Huaqian Zhang, Selina Reiterer and Janine Maria Schneider

This name, Paratext, hides a monthly program of performances by artists in residence at Hangar as well as artists on exchange grants. They present, in different formats, specific projects or parts of their work. The sessions are always open to the public with the purpose of enabling interaction with the artists themselves.

The next Paratext session will take place on Wednesday, June 29 at 6:30 p.m. in Hangar’s Sala Ricson.

Projects will be presented by:

Ivonne Villamil (Short-term residency)

Ivonne Villamil is an artist and researcher. Departing from the exploration of one of the components of Acoustic Ecology: geophony (or sounds of the earth), she currently works with listening devices and practices that are closely related to matter, memory and territory in Latin America. Her projects include different media such as installation, sculpture, drawing, sound art, audiovisual or performance; that create multiple narratives that address geopolitics, poetics and technology in the relationship between body and nature.

Huaqian Zhang (Short-term residency)

Huaqian (aka. waki) might call herself a speculative designer moving through a transdisciplinary field, as she usually gets confused and does not know when she is drawing patterns or planes, sewing or wiring, writing or filming; when living or dreaming.

Waki seeks to establish ties between art and design, understanding art as a world processor —from analytic incomes to disruptive outcomes—, and design as a translation of such expression to an endured and systematized dimension. Her execution method tends to be the micro-observation of everyday life and/or the macro-expansion of a fantasized fiction, searching for dumb ways to die and hidden ways to be alive.

Selina Reiterer (Exchange grant between Bregenz and Barcelona)

Selina Reiterer is an artist and textile designer. After her design studies in Berlin and Paris she worked in various cooperations and carried out research at the ETH Zurich in the framework of a project on the connection between technology and design perspectives. Since then she has investigated the relations between object and resonance with textile and sound-oriented space installations and performance.

Janine Maria Schneider (Exchange grant between Bregenz and Barcelona)

In her artistic practice, Janine Maria Schneider negotiates issues around body identity in and through public space, architecture and spatial politics. She prefers to work with the media of photography, video, installation and performance. She is particularly interested in which way designed space affects people’s performance and vice versa. Schneider’s artistic practice is borne by a long-standing interest in how cultural guiding ideas and political decisions manifest themselves, especially in public space.
