The projector: maintenance and hacking. A workshop by Alex McEnzie

As part of the SPECTRAL activities dedicated to Expanded Cinematic Arts, the Crater-Lab residency project presents the workshop The Projector: Maintenance and Hacking by Alex McEnzie, Canadian filmmaker and member of the Iris Film Collective.

The workshop will focus on exploring the best practices and maintenance of 16mm projectors, including maintenance, use, safety, lubricants, belts, bulbs, workarounds, common problems and ways to fix them. The projectors will be opened up to better understand the moving parts and what they do, and all elements will be examined in more detail, from the film gate to the optical reader and beyond. The projectors are then manipulated to expand their potential and reuse their function. Light, lens, focal plane, film gate, speed, shutter, motor, bulb and screen will be examined with live examples and a close, hands-on approach. We will try different techniques to better understand how these elements work, both separately and together, to demystify cinema’s most important tool.
