Results of the artistic residency in Dakar

Gathered on 31 October 2024, the jury consisting of the team of RAW Material Company and Hangar

DECIDES:

To award the artistic residency in Dakar to Maguette Dieng with the project Doole bo gissul (An invisible force).

‘How can sound help to better understand and connect with a society? What historical, cultural and social context can field recordings provide? Is it possible to speculate with these soundscapes in such a way that we can not only narrate but reconsider, reimagine and redesign a city and its human activity? Is music a way to escape and evade the everyday noise as we walk down the street? And if so, why do we need it? In what ways does common noise alter human beings and their interaction with urban space? How does sound affect and elevate our spirituality? Can the needs and deficiencies of a population be understood by listening to its social rhythm? How does a society translate into sound? How are the aural dimensions of a place embodied? Does active listening make us better people?

The idea of this residency is to create a sound archive to give answers to these questions and to speculate on ways in which these recordings can be captured to translate the environment. The noise/sound of a city expressed in its different areas tells us about the singularities of each territory. We can recognise social and economic privilege, religious practices, human cadence, etc… making it an equally valuable tool to document, examine and reach conclusions that we are used to making through images or writing.’

We thank you for sending us your proposals and congratulate Maguette Dieng.
