Taller Caminal press release
Announcement of the closure of Taller Caminal, a space for arts development in Poble Nou
Taller Caminal, located at number 172, carrer Pallars, announces its upcoming
closure on November 15th, after five years of providing space for art production,
diffusion and experimentation. The closure is a direct consequence of the 22@
urban renewal plan that has been affecting Barcelona’s Poble Nou area in recent
years. Taller Caminal was one of the last industrial spaces that allowed over
20 artists from around the world to be housed, and encouraged exchange and
integration in the city’s arts scene. In response to the inminent closure, the
Taller’s search for reasonably priced rental premises that would allow its
activities to continue has been fruitless, taking into account the overvaluation
of real estate in Barcelona. In the end, Caminal joins the long list of similar
kinds of spaces used for the arts that have disappeared from Barcelona over the
last few years, which leads us to conclude that "the city of cultural
tourism" doesn’t care for those of us who keep it alive on a daily basis. We
see it as a cultural policy that doesn’t support or enable any alternative projects
other than those generated by the institutions.
