The Common Wallet

As part of our Grey Tuesdays investigations at Hangar, we are taking on the spectre of Money – that core administrative material, emotional quicksand, and the elephant in any conversation. Our interest in money goes beyond demands for fair pay – or just getting more of it – to experiments at the edges of what seems possible to do.

The Common Wallet is an initiative of eleven Brussels-based people who lived out of a common bank account for nearly 5 years. They wired all their individual income into the shared account, and each used the money according to their needs, wishes and desires, no matter if it corresponded with the income they contributed or not. By detaching money from individual ownership, the Common Wallet questions taboos and injustices within the current financial system. Their audacious aim is to convert money into a means to enable listening, care, transparency and even joy among people.

Our next Grey Tuesday features Common Wallet’s Christophe Meierhans, in conversation with Hangar’s Administrative Fellow Kate Rich, to sift through the experiment and its findings. This warm-up chat will be followed by an opportunity for immersive action, to imagine for a moment how such radical bookkeeping could play out in our own situations and lives.
