Call for artistic residency exchanges between Stuttgart and Barcelona

For the tenth year in a row, Hangar launches this call for artists exchange grants between the land Baden-Württemberg and Catalonia. This grant arose in 2015 at the initiative of the Goethe-Institut Barcelona, the Kunststiftung Baden-Württemberg, the Württembergischer Kunstverein Stuttgart -WKV and Hangar, Center for Artistic Production and Research and receives the support of the Ministerium für Wissenschaft, Forschung und Kunst Baden-Wurttemberg -MWK- and the Generalitat de Catalunya.

The aim of this program is to support the development of artistic works linked to the contexts of each of the participating institutions, to promote interregional exchange between creators from Baden-Württemberg and Catalonia, and to enable experiences of dialogue between different artistic approaches, backgrounds and production methods to mutually enrich each other.

Objective of this call and its recipients
The objective of this call is to offer a grant to four artists (2 from Baden-Württemberg and 2 from Catalonia) to foster mobility, research and production expenses for the realization of two months residencies in Barcelona and Stuttgart.
Participation in this competition is open to all visual artists of any age and nationality living in the geographical area of Baden-Württemberg and Catalonia, who develop proposals in the fields of visual arts, performance, installations, sound art, audiovisual, new media, etc.
Note: the grant only covers individual accommodation and endowment. In the case of collectives, there is only one scholarship for all persons of the collective and the collective should appoint one contact person.

Hosting institutions
In Barcelona the two residencies will be hosted at Hangar.

About Hangar. Hangar is a space that offers and upgrades the material, technical and conceptual conditions to support creation and thinking linked to the context of contemporary art in all phases of the process. In particular, Hangar is concerned with that which takes place before, or as a precondition for, the presentation of results.

Hangar has an open idea of contemporary art as a node of interconnection between various forms of sensibility and knowledge capable of a singular speculative imagination. For this reason, Hangar puts into practice, with all its consequences, the interaction of contemporary art with technological and scientific research; with other fields of cultural production and with cultural studies as a field of critique and analysis from which to observe questions such as ecological transition, the tacit governance of infrastructures, the privileges of gender, class or race, and neo-liberal dysfunctions.

In Barcelona the accommodation consists of a single bedroom at Hangar’s Residence. The Residence occupies the former guard’s house on the Can Ricart site, next to Hangar’s installations and has a ground floor and a first floor (80.99m2 and 62.59 m²) with two bedrooms, a bathroom, a living room and a kitchen each. The residence is designed to accommodate up to four artists at the same time, for short stays ranging from one week to four months. The aim is for a minimum of two artists to live together each time in order to promote and enrich the exchange of experiences and knowledge beyond their own individual research and production projects.

About the Kunstverein Stuttgart. Founded in 1827, the Württembergischer Kunstverein Stuttgart is one of the largest art associations with around 3,000 members and an exhibition and event space of over 1,500 square meters. It sees itself as a place of open and participatory engagement with the diverse practices of international contemporary arts – and their far-reaching socio-political fields of reference. The WKV works on the basis of both locally and internationally anchored, transcultural as well as transdisciplinary networks.

The WKV supports production, work processes and the development of knowledge about contemporary art on a theoretical and practical level. Its work includes, among other things, the promotion of artistic research projects and the co-production of new works.

The guest apartment of the Württembergischer Kunstverein Stuttgart is located in the Kunstverein’s studio building in the “Schellenkönig”. It has a ground and first floor with two bedrooms, a bathroom, a guest toilet, a living room and a kitchen (ca. 70 qm). Unfortunately, the apartment is not barrier-free.
