Exchange grants for artistic projects between Stuttgart and Barcelona

For the sixth consecutive year Hangar launches this call for artist exchange grants between Baden-Württemberg and Catalonia. This grant was created in 2015 on the initiative of the Goethe-Institut Barcelona, the Kunststiftung Baden-Württemberg, the Württembergischer Kunstverein Stuttgart -WBK and the Hangar Visual Arts Production and Research Centre (Barcelona) and is supported by the Ministerium für Wissenschaft, Forschung und Kunst Baden-Wurttemberg -MWK- and the Generalitat de Catalunya.

Objective of this call and its addressees

The aim of this call is to offer a mobility and production grant to four artists (2 from Baden-Württemberg and 2 from Catalonia) to support the development of artistic works linked to the contexts of each of the participating centres and institutions, to encourage interregional exchange between creators from Baden-Württemberg and Catalonia, and to enable dialogue experiences between two artistic communities and their respective social collectives.

Participation in this competition is open to all visual artists of any age and nationality living in the geographical environment of Baden-Württemberg and Catalonia, who develop proposals in the field of contemporary public art, performance, installations, sound art, visual arts, audiovisual and new media, etc.

Period of residence

The residencies will last two months each and will take place in August and September in Stuttgart and September and October in Barcelona.

Benefits and endowment of the grant

– Displacement: €300.
– Financial endowment: €1,800 for maintenance (2 months) and €900 for production (gross amounts).
– Accommodation and work space.
– Use of the centre’s infrastructures.
– Punctual technical assistance. If exclusive dedication to the project is required, the costs will be charged to the production budget.

*The residence does not include medical insurance. It is mandatory that the artists personally process a medical insurance valid for the period of the residence.

Application

Each artist can apply with only one project. The application must be sent in .pdf format to mail marzia(at)hangar.org with the subject “Beca intercambio Baden-Württemberg Catalunya 2020”

The document must contain:

– Personal data (full name, date and place of birth, DNI or passport number, email contact, telephone contact).
– Biography (2500 characters maximum, spaces included).
– Artist statement: It is not a biography and it is a brief discourse on the artistic identity of the work, that which characterizes it thematically, theoretically and formally (2500 characters maximum, spaces included).
– Motivation letter (maximum 2500 characters, spaces included).
– Project (2500 characters maximum, spaces included).
– Graphic dossier (up to a maximum of 10 images with their technical specifications).
– URL (only for videos). This field is optional if you have attached images to the graphic dossier and is obligatory if you do not attach images. Write a single URL to a video or animation (personal web, vimeo, youtube, blip.tv or any other). The commission will watch a maximum of 5 minutes of video.
– Personal web URL.

* Applications can be submitted in English, Catalan or Spanish. If the candidacy is presented in Catalan or Spanish, the translation into English must also be sent for evaluation in Stuttgart.

Deadline for submission of applications

The deadline for receipt of applications is May 17, 2020, at 11:59 pm CEST.
If the documentation is not submitted by the deadlines established by this call, the application will be considered null and void.

Selection process

The meeting of the jury and the announcement of the chosen projects will take place at the beginning of June 2020.

Commitments of the selected project

Selected artists will commit to:
– Participate during their residency in project communication activities.
– Deliver a final report of the project to the centres and an assessment of the residence hall for a maximum of one month after its completion.
– Make a presentation of the results of the residence at the end of it. In Barcelona, the presentation will take place within the framework of the Paratext. In Stuttgart, the presentation will take place at the Kunstverein in Stuttgart or in another suitable place.
– Include the logos of the participating institutions.
– During the residency, the selected artists undertake to maintain active contact with the artists residing in the host city.

Valuation criteria

It will be valued:
– The interest of the proposal according to the lines of work of each one of the residence centres.
– The capacity of the project to resolve the issue it raises.
– A realistic evaluation of the time and the adequacy of the objectives of the project to the context and resources of the participating centres.
– The transversality of the project itself, that is, the applicability and communication of its results to other contexts or people.
– The capacity of the project to involve the network of collaborators of the participating centres and institutions.
– Impact and cultural, artistic and social projection of the residence.

Participating institutions

  • Kunststiftung Baden-Württemberg. The Art Foundation Baden-Württemberg is an institution that promotes the development of young creation in contemporary art. Its aim is to support the development of the artistic work of young emerging talents – who live or were born in the federal state of Baden-Württemberg – for a limited period, which guarantees economic independence and freedom in the work of art. The Foundation supports young talents in the fields of visual arts, performing arts, literature, music, art criticism and cultural management with subsidized international residences, providing a space for work and accommodation. With the production, organization of events and publications, the Foundation has awarded works to a wider public.
  • Kunstverein Stuttgart. The WKV supports the production, the work processes and the construction of knowledge of Contemporary Art at the theoretical and practical level. Its work includes the management of ateliers, the promotion of artistic research projects, the co-production of new works and the development of complex exhibition devices, among others.
  • Goethe-Institut Barcelona. It is the cultural institute of the Federal Republic of Germany and is active throughout the world with the aim of promoting knowledge of the German language abroad and promoting cultural cooperation at an international level. In addition, the Goethe-Institut transmits a broad view of Germany through information on the cultural, social and political life of the country. It works on the basis of mutual dialogue and is therefore at the service of all those who are actively involved in German language and culture. To this end, it cooperates with both private and public cultural bodies and promotes cooperation with local cultural agents, organising and supporting a wide range of cultural activities.
  • Departamento de Cultura de la Generalitat de Catalunya.
  • Hangar Barcelona. It is an open centre for research and artistic production that supports creators and artists. Hangar’s mission is to support creators in all phases of the visual arts production process, and to contribute to the best achievement of each of their projects. To this end, all its services focus on facilitating artists’ access to the necessary material and technical resources, and on providing a context for experimentation and the free transfer of knowledge.
