Paratext #80 with Paula Pérez-Roda, Valentina Alvarado Matos-Carlos Vásquez Méndez and R-010

This name, Paratext, hides a monthly program of performances by artists in residence at Hangar as well as artists on exchange grants. They present, in different formats, specific projects or parts of their work. The sessions are always open to the public with the purpose of enabling interaction with the artists themselves.

The next Paratext session will take place on Wednesday, December 11th, at 7 p.m. in Hangar’s Sala Ricson.

Projects will be presented by:

Paula Pérez-Roda (Fundació Banc Sabadell-Hangar Research grant)

Paula Pérez-Roda, PhD in Cultural Studies from Princeton University (2023), is a researcher, artist, and editor. Her research explores the technological and cultural order of verbal and textual arts, the history of literate processes and radical and collective creative practices. She has received support from the Universidad Autónoma de Madrid, Princeton University, the Government of Catalonia, Matadero-Madrid, and the Conferencia de Rectores de las Universidades de España. She has published in specialized and general journals such as Revista Concreta, Anuario de Literatura Comparada, Anuario de Glotopolítica, or Kamchatka, as well as in various collective volumes and artistic publications. She has taught research seminars, popular education, and critical studies in artistic and university settings, as well as artistic and editorial workshops.

Valentina Alvarado Matos and Carlos Vásquez Méndez (Long-Term Residency)

As a collective, Valentina and Carlos investigate the image around the film apparatus. They have recently participated in programmes at the Microscope Gallery and Anthology Film Archives. In the spring of 2023 they premiered the performance FFF at the Museum of Moving Image in New York and were selected for Barcelona Producciò. Paracronismos, their first project developed at La Escocesa, was presented at CCCB, Zumzeig, Mostra Cinema Periférico S(8), Premi Miquel Casablancas, Filmoteca de Catalunya and L’Estruch. In October 2020, they presented the installation Y si ver era el fuego at the Filmoteca de Catalunya as part of the exhibition programme of the LOOP festival, curated by Carolina Ciuti and Marina Vinyes. Their extended film performance Echo Chamber was commissioned by the CCCB for the 20th anniversary of Xcèntric. They are currently artists-in-residence at Hangar and their work is included in the Light Cone film distribution catalogue in France.

R-010 (Barcelona CREA Grant)

R-010 is an experimental artist and researcher exploring the intersection of neural networks, sound art, and contemporary music production. Through a forward-thinking approach, R-010 investigates how artificial intelligence can complement and enhance human creativity, leveraging cutting-edge technologies to push the boundaries of artistic expression.

As part of his research project, R-010 has developed a framework for training neural networks using curated audio libraries of vocal samples, drum patterns, and classical guitar recordings. These datasets were meticulously prepared to feed machine learning models capable of generating new sonic textures and compositional structures, bridging the gap between traditional musicianship and computational creativity.

The project combines the intuition and artistry of human creation with the generative potential of neural networks, resulting in unique auditory experiences that explore new paradigms of music production and composition. By seamlessly integrating AI-generated materials into the creative process, R-010 demonstrates the transformative possibilities of collaboration between human and machine in sound art.

Through his ongoing work, R-010 aims to expand the possibilities of sonic art while contributing to broader discussions on the artistic potential of artificial intelligence in the cultural landscape.
