Paratext #82 with Stella Rahola Matutes, Mathilde Vignaud and Ibai Gorriti

This name, Paratext, hides a monthly program of performances by artists in residence at Hangar as well as artists on exchange grants. They present, in different formats, specific projects or parts of their work. The sessions are always open to the public with the purpose of enabling interaction with the artists themselves.

The next Paratext session will take place on Tuesday, May 20, at 7 p.m. in Hangar’s Sala Ricson.

Projects will be presented by:

Stella Rahola Matutes (Long-term residency)

Stella Rahola Matutes holds a degree in architecture from ETSAB (UPC) in Barcelona, a master’s degree in design from ETSAB (2011) and a MFA from Goldsmiths, University of London (2019). Through architecture, she is interested in space, construction and the material capacity for transformation. Her practice is concerned with the creation of sites and spatially situational encounters, through installations and sculptural works that salvage disused crafts and techniques. The continued use of borosilicate glass permeates between craft and science, engaging with other things and species. The kinships that emerge from these associations run through forces and affectivities, opening up possibilities for forms of coexistence that imply a sustainable contingency.

Mathilde Vignaud (CEAAC and Hangar with Lumbung Press)

Mathilde Vignaud graduated in illustration from the Haute École des Arts du Rhin (Strasbourg School of Decorative Arts), where she developed a passion for printing, particularly through screen printing and metal engraving.

Through these mediums, as well as storytelling and comics, Mathilde creates a universe that is close to our reality, but where absurdity has taken over. The grotesque, the immoral, sometimes violence, and strange characters intersect and collide, forming an enigmatic and psychedelic world.

Arising from her practice of self-publishing and printing, Mathilde Vignaud is also interested in the current challenges of these practices and questions the social and political role of printing and bookmaking. This was notably explored in her graduation thesis on graphzines.

Since 2024, Mathilde has co-founded, with Colombian artist Desperfecto, the publishing house SLURP, which aspires to be a collective and borderless space for graphic experimentation, culminating in the printed object.

Ibai Gorriti (Residència Index, Estocolm)

Ibai Gorriti works as a curator, artistic director, and creative consultant in the fields of contemporary art, fashion, and design. Their practice explores curatorial work as a contingent space, often through editorial practices, para-institutionality, and queer/crip/mad discourses. Their trajectory as an activist has led them to collaborate with spaces such as DIS, Tate Exchange, Haus der Kulturen der Welt, Centre Pompidou, De Appel, and the CCCB, where they carried out the mediation program Sade: Freedom or Evil. Recently, they curated the exhibition Deep Objects at De Fabriek and participated in the Unfinished Publics project of the Dresden State Collections. From 2020 to 2022, they co-directed the project space FUTCH club* in the Raval.
