Daniel Cao

Medium-term residency

May - October 2023

Daniel Cao. Nicaragua/Barcelona, 1995

As a creator, he is interested in fixing and translating the things that pass through his imagination into images, stories, narratives or different artistic forms. In his projects, he starts from a basic idea or concept, in which the theme of each work resides, and which he then links to the context and territory in order to carry it out. He sees the works as a meeting point between his references (among which science fiction, video games, biology, technology and extraterrestrial speculation stand out) and the audience. All the projects use different formats and have different needs, using the photographic image, installation, sound, performance or multimedia environments.

Recent projects include Vinader (Prologue), a photographic, sound and performance installation in the exhibition Mapes d’allò que pot venir, curated by col.lectiu Bord, at Sala d’Art Jove Creació 2022. In 2022 she carried out the project Animal Cruising, a performative lecture that was streamed in the Sala Bar of Arts Santa Mònica during the public screenings of the film and experimentation workshop coordinated by Andrés Duque and Mónica Rovira. Between 2020 and 2021 she carried out the project Retratos del movimiento, which led to her first solo exhibition at the Centre Cívic Teixonera (Horta-Guinardó); this exhibition occupied different spaces in the centre and brought together a series of photographic and video portraits in which different performers explore movement from dance or on its margins. In 2021, he began working on the collaborative proposal with Judit Arazo, @Babycoconut. In the same year he also made the audiovisual project Vincent Freeman, about man and his relationship with the environment from a dystopian vision of reality; the project had the collaboration of the Museu Blau in Barcelona. In 2019, he published Espiga, an artist’s book about the universe of fables and plants; this publication was produced as a TFP in the postgraduate photography programme at IDEP Barcelona (Escola superior d’imatge i disseny).
