Kate Bohunnis

Long-term residency

May 2025 - April 2027

Kate Bohunnis. Adelaide, 1990

In the immediate, Kate Bohunnis’ practice prioritizes an inventive approach to materials and their ability to communicate conceptual concerns. Their work is primarily focused on gender, identity, and queer methodologies. In recent projects, Bohunnis has turned their attention to the complexities and trappings of pleasure, from a personal and neuroscientific standpoint. They are also interested in spiritualism as a vehicle for exploring family history and inventive methods of psychological support.

In form, Bohunnis’ work often leans toward the abject as a way of negotiating bodily and political identities. Large-scale sculptural installations use stainless steel, marble, and printmaking in contradictory and deliberate dialogue with wax, silicone, latex, leather, and textiles. The works are often highly charged with allusions to power, dominance, subjugation, and containment.

To date, notable exhibitions include ACE Open, Adelaide; Art Brussels, Brussels; Art Gallery of South Australia; BLINDSIDE, Melbourne; Canberra Contemporary Art Space; COMA, Sydney; FELTspace, Adelaide; Firstdraft, Sydney; GlogauAIR; Berlin, Outer Space, Brisbane; Perth Institute of Contemporary Art; praxis ARTSPACE, Adelaide and Queensland Art Gallery.

Bohunnis is a graduate from Flinders University, South Australia, with First Class Honours. They have undertaken residencies at GlogauAIR, Berlin, Frans Masereel Centrum, Belgium, and Sanskriti Kendra, India. Bohunnis was awarded the 2021 Ramsay Art Prize, Australia’s premier prize for emerging artists. They were also recipient of an Arts SA 2022 Fellowship, and other recent awards include the Eran Svigos Award for Best Visual Art, Adelaide Fringe (2020); South Australian Graduate Award, Helpmann Academy (2020); David Hayden Professional Development Award (2018); and The Watson Award (2017).
