Sergi Botella Llongueras, new director of Hangar
The jury has appointed Sergi Botella Llongueras as the new director of Hangar, a center for artistic production and research, for the 2025–2029 term. His proposal was selected for its strong alignment with Hangar’s context and ecosystem, placing resident artists at the core and advocating for a non-hierarchical, inclusive, and collective model of leadership. Botella’s project aims to strengthen technical services, improve working and production conditions, and ensure Hangar’s institutional continuity through a humble, realistic, and deeply committed approach to the artistic community. His vision emphasizes everyday coexistence, support, and care as key pillars for a sustainable, porous institution that is attentive to the material needs of creative processes.
The selection process received a total of 16 applications, of which 5 advanced to the final interview stage. The jury was composed of the Board of Trustees of the private AAVC Foundation (Daniel Steegmann, Carlos Almela, Lucía Egaña, Olga Subirós, Núria Güell, Eva Fàbregas, Laura Benítez Valero, and Claudia Segura), and the process also included the participation of Xavier Sánchez Ruiz, lawyer and legal advisor to Hangar, without voice or vote; Marc Pinedo, as a representative of ICUB; Tere Badia, an independent expert; Eulàlia García Valls, representing the (former) residents’ collective; and Antonio Gagliano, representing the center’s team — the latter four with voice but no vote.
Sergi Botella Llongueras (Terrassa, 1976) is an artist, cultural producer, and manager closely linked to Hangar’s ecosystem, where he has developed various research and mediation projects focused on improving the material and labor conditions of artists. His artistic practice explores the intersection of self-representation, visual culture, electronic music, and collective practices. He has participated in exhibitions such as Composició de Lloc, Nonument, YOU GOT TO GET IN TO GET OUT, and CLUBS, Art a la pista. With a career that combines artistic creation and cultural management, Botella advocates for a horizontal and approachable leadership style, focused on supporting artists and ensuring institutional sustainability.
Anna Manubens, outgoing director
The Board of Trustees of the AAVC Foundation wishes to express its gratitude to Anna Manubens for her work as director of Hangar over the past years, during which she faced significant institutional and structural challenges with determination and urgency.
Manubens strengthened Hangar’s role as a space committed to artistic research, introducing new lines of inquiry and revitalizing existing ones. She also consolidated the center as a benchmark in artistic production, established new international alliances, and—above all—demonstrated that institutions can also become spaces for political imagination. She has driven key structural transformations such as the reform of the statutes, the drafting of a code of ethics, improvements in governance with the creation of the Office of Good Governance, and even the long-awaited renovation works of one of the center’s warehouses.
