David Franklin participates in “Structures Of Exception”
The exhibition is the result of fieldwork carried out by the participants of the workshop “Structures of exception” in July 2015 led by the artist Angela Bonadies, where the port of Barcelona was crossed and “exceptional” cases were located from which display ideas, texts and images.
The participants of the workshop have been collectively developed from two working groups, which have focused their search in two spaces of Barcelona’s waterfront: Cinema IMAX 3D and their environments; and the relationship between Barceloneta and its memory and Marina del Puerto Viejo.
Contribuitors: Homesession, Idensitat, HANGAR, PhotoEspaña, Embajada Española to Venezuela, Creative Europe / Artizen, Universities of Fine Arts in Barcelona, AVV de Òstia.
About “Empire of Rats”:
Empire of Rats is a publication that combines text and photos, along with three images, has been developed as a part of the research project = Port 3D Cinema 3D Structures Exception. Taking the IMAX theater in Port Vell abandoned as a starting point, Rat Empire expands outward to explore the phenomenon of modern ruins. The text makes connections and differences between the IMAX cinema and the ruins of Japan today, ghosts Tokyo reconstruction in the aftermath of World War II. Postwar Modernism, Nazi architecture, science fiction, and dreams of capitalism are all invoked to examine the position occupied by the ruins in modern societies. Returning to Barcelona, it seems that the marketing of Port Vell and even nationalism that is sweeping Europe are in fact simply other ruins, while connecting society with its past, its concept of itself in the present, and the kind of future to which you want to advance, are manipulated and deconstructed.
The text is accompanied by a series of photos taken at the Port Vell harbor exploring the landscape rapidly changing. These images enter into a dialogue with a second series of photos, taken from several ruins in Japan, including a base of the US Air Force and abandoned houses in the mountains around Tokyo.
Three images, combined with drawing and painting pictures, represent unequivocally absurd environment of the commercial port of Barcelona.
