Presentation and round table with Oron Catts
On 27 February, from 7 to 8.30 pm, Hangar will host a presentation by Oron Catts in conversation with Andy Gracie and Laura Benítez Valero, as part of the European Biofriction project.
Oron Catts will give a presentation of his artistic projects, including an introduction to SymbioticA, a pioneering research laboratory that allows artists to carry out wet biology practices in a university department of biological sciences. This is a space dedicated to research, learning, critique and practical engagement with the life sciences. After the presentation, a round table will be proposed on some topics discussed, with the participation of the artist and researcher Andie Gracie and Laura Benítez Valero, director of Biofriction.
About the participants
Oron Catts is an artist, researcher, designer and curator. In 2000, he co-founded SymbioticA, a biological art research centre at The University of Western Australia. Catts was a Research Fellow in Harvard Medical School, a visiting Scholar at the Department of Art and Art History, Stanford University, and a Visiting Professor of Design Interaction (2009-2012), and a Professor at Large in Contestable Design (2015-2017) at the Royal College of Arts, London. His work was exhibited and collected by museums such as MoMA NY, Centre Pompidou, Mori art Museum, NGV, GoMA, Yerba Buena Center for the Arts, San Francisco, Ars Electronica and National Art Museum of China, among others.
Andy Gracie is an artist and researcher. In his work examines the opportunities that other disciplines offer to creative practice, such as biology, astronomy or robotics. The whole of his work is situated between art and science, generating situations of interaction between emerging systems and behaviors. His work has been exhibited internationally, including commissions for new works of the Arnolfini (Bristol, UK), Organisms in Barcelona and AV06 of the Northeast of England. He has exhibited at festivals such as ISEA, Artbots, Radar, Ars Electronica and the robotics exhibition for the Capital of Culture in Lille 2004. His works have received honorary mention of VIDA (2007) and Ars Electronica (2007 and 2015).
The activity is free and will take place in Hangar’s Ricson hall.
