Fem_Lab exchange Catalonia-Austria: one-week residency grant

Fem_Lab exchange Catalonia-Austria: one-week research and exchange residency grant with Mz* Baltazar’s Lab in Vienna on the intersection of Art, Science and Tech through a (trans)feminist lens.

Aim of the call for applications
Hangar, Centre for Art Research and Production in Barcelona is now accepting applications for grants for the Fem_Lab exchange Catalonia-Austria, a one-week research and exchange residency grant in Vienna with the feminist collective Mz* Baltazar’s Lab.

The one-week research and exchange residency programme is open to Catalan-based artists or collectives of legal age working in any creative discipline who are carrying out an art project that relates to the term “hacking” and works at the intersection of Art, Science, and Technology through a (trans)feminist lens. The selected artist or group should be able to open a debate on one of the following questions:

• What do you understand as “transfeminist hacking”?
• What could transfeminist hardware look like?
• How to decolonize tech?

The selected artist or group will receive a grant to carry out a residency in Vienna. The residency will last one week, running from December 2nd to December 8th, 2024.

About Fem_Lab Exchange Catalonia-Austria
The Fem_Lab Exchange Catalonia-Austria project is a collaboration between Mz* Baltazar’s Lab and Hangar, promoted by the Delegation of the Government of Catalonia to Central Europe to support artistic exchange between Catalonia and Austria.

About Hangar
Hangar is a centre engaged in maintaining (generating, updating, reviewing, and supporting) the necessary conditions to facilitate art research and production in the sense of critical forms of speculation and practices capable of addressing the urgent issues and debates currently facing society. For Hangar, art is a way of producing knowledge. In view of this, it defends art research as a research category in its own right, with its own way of finding and producing knowledge. Hangar seeks to support content creators at every stage of their art research and production processes by providing them with a whole host of tools and services (some of which are managed by Hangar and others by its resident collectives) to help them access the conceptual, contextual, semiotic, material, and technical resources they need and provide a setting for experimenting and for the free transfer of knowledge.

About Mz Baltazar’s Lab
Mz* Baltazar’s Laboratory identifies as an intersectional feminist collective, coming from a variety of educational backgrounds. The lab is intended as a safer space for people who have traditionally been excluded from or have felt unsafe in spaces where science is taught or technology is being used. We invite those people (women and trans* individuals) to participate, exhibit their art, or give workshops that bring together technology, art, and a critical understanding of social structures. Our exhibitions and events are open to all audiences and are intended to support women* in the broad sense of the political term, as well as those who work on feminist issues, empowerment, and overturning patriarchy.

Shared office and work studio in the Mz* Baltazar’s Lab space (Jägerstraße 52-54 1200 Vienna)

NOTE: Fem_Lab exchange Catalonia-Austria is a research and exchange grant, not a production grant. Its resources and services are there for research and consultation purposes.

Duration
The residency lasts one week, running from December 2nd to December 8th, 2024.

Terms and Conditions
1. Applications must be submitted in a single PDF file.
2. Each candidate may include no more than one project in their application.
3. Group projects may be submitted, provided that one member of the group is chosen to represent it.
4. The selected participant will receive an aid of €1,500 gross from the Delegation of the Government of Catalonia to Central Europe. This will include the cost of public presentations, which shall be designed by the artist on the basis that they provide research settings open to the public.
5. The Delegation of the Government of Catalonia to Central Europe will also cover:
— A round-trip to Vienna
— Accommodation

Commitments
— Participation in exchange meetings among the artist(s) and collectives (online and in Vienna).
— Public presentation of the individual or collective works at Mz* Baltazar’s Lab space in Vienna.
— Brainstorming session on shared interests, common passions, and possible future collaborations.
— Inclusion of the following organizations’ logos in the communication of the project: Mz* Baltazar’s Lab, Hangar, and the Delegation of the Government of Catalonia to Central Europe.

Selection Process
Applications must be sent in a single PDF document attached to an email with a subject line following this format: Beca_Fem_Lab exchange Catalonia-Austria_FIRST NAME_SURNAME to veronica(at)hangar.org.

The document should include the following information:

1. Personal Details:
— First name and surname
— Full residential address (including city and country)
— Telephone number
— Email address
— Date of birth
— Nationality

2. A brief biography of the applicant outlining their main lines of work and research (maximum 500 characters, including spaces).

3. The applicant’s CV (maximum 1,500 characters, including spaces).

4. A summary of the project (maximum 2,000 characters, including spaces).

5. Up to five images of the project.

IMPORTANT NOTE:
— Applications missing any of the required information and/or exceeding the stated limits will be rejected.
— Applications must be submitted in English.
— Applications may only be submitted by natural persons, either individually or in groups. In the case of group submissions, a representative must be designated, authorized by all members of the group to represent them, and responsible for all contractual matters.

Selection Board
The selection board will consist of the following members:
– Two representatives from Hangar
– Members of Mz* Baltazar’s Lab

Assessment Criteria
The selection board will evaluate each project based on the following criteria:
– Alignment with the stated aim of the application.
– Relevance, significance, and interest of the project.
– Applicant’s artistic background or research experience.

Calendar
Application submission period: from June 1st to July 12th, 2024, at 13:00 (GMT+1).
Results announcement: mid-July 2023.
Residency program: one week, from December 2nd to December 8th, 2024.
