Paratext #71 with Pedro Torres, Arnau Sala Saez and Yen Tzu Chang

This name, Paratext, hides a monthly program of performances by artists in residence at Hangar as well as artists on exchange grants. They present, in different formats, specific projects or parts of their work. The sessions are always open to the public with the purpose of enabling interaction with the artists themselves.

The next Paratext session will take place on Monday, July 10th at 7 p.m. in Hangar’s Sala Ricson.

Pedro Torres (Long-term residency)

Pedro Torres focuses his artistic practice on issues related to the concepts of time, distance, memory, language and image, using a variety of media in the development of his works and research projects. The diagram above shows these concepts and the materials used in his work. He is interested in working with these elements-coordinates in a combined and subjective way, where aesthetics and concept are balanced. The image, understood broadly, is always present as a mechanism, tool and concept on which to structure and question certain axes, such as, for example, the relationship between the formation of memory and images, the image in relation to history (time, anachronism) and narrative (language) or the appropriate and decontextualised image. Scientific themes, theories and approaches are also very much present, as well as the need to explore different media and processes and to investigate in a methodological, intuitive and poetic way.

Arnau Sala Saez (Long-term residency)

Arnau Sala Saez is a musician and visual artist. His work transits different formats that feed off each other. Sound translates visual structures, and the form is condensed into sound compositions. Through this habitat Arnau is building a system in which its elements are related around the same consciousness.

His work is also conditioned by the Attention Deficit Disorder he suffers and for which he bases his methodology on the limitation of his tools and his forms of organization to few elements. A good example is the Multiplesofeleven project where sound and visual compositions are constructed from multiple elements of the eleventh number or other research which explores the reduction of visual abundance through the use of a single color scale.

Yen Tzu Chang is a new media artist/ sound artist based in Taiwan. She holds a bachelor’s degree from the New Media Art Department of the Taipei National University of Art. In 2018, she graduated with a master’s degree from the Interface Culture Department of the Kunstuniversität Linz in Austria.

For Yen Tzu Chang, artistic creation is exploring the essence of life with philosophy and scientific thinking. She combines art, programming, and technical media into her artworks, including interdisciplinary art and experimental performances based on sound installations.
