Antonio Ortega

Antonio Ortega, Sant Celoni 1968

Period of residence: 2007

Antonio Ortega is a catalan artist. His works tend to shock the viewer, presenting rondallas leading to the end of the common logic which all participate. However, the author argues that his exercises, always orbiting the socials conventions, not born by cynicism, but from the surprise of a naive attitude.

An alleged naivete, which tries to defend itself in a form of objectivity with the desire not to suggest conclusions, but only previous reflections from audiovisual record of events. Especially notable is his fascination with social behaviour, in some cases around artistic dynamics.

They empathises their individual projects: Populisme i Popularitat at Museu in Empordà, Werbung und Demagogie at Galeria Klaus and Elisabeth Thoman, Opfer sind wir alle at Städtisches Museum Abteiberg (Mönchengladbach), Demagogie et Propaganda at Laboratoires d’Aubervilliers (Paris), No m’agrada com sóc at Galeria Toni Tàpies or I hope Alice Cooper doesn’t become a vegetarian at SMOCA in Phoenix (Arizona).

He has been responsible for the activities of the Centre Arts Santa Monica from 2004 to 2008, where he empathises in the formats of work that dispensed with the exhibition as a privileged channel for distributing and presenting artistic creations, projects as Espontani Festival, the radio Hem pres – curated by Jorge Luis Marzo – or alternatives to the Exhibition Beatriz Herràez. He created a collection of books with the following titles: Capital! by Amanda Cuesta Ed., Producta 50 by YProductions Ed. and Copyfight by Oscar Abril Ascaso and Elastic Ed.

He is currently professor of visual arts at the Massana School and he is represented by the gallery and Elisabeth Klaus Thoman.
