Open call for projects Mobile Art Lab workshop – M.A.L. 2011

To whom is addressed: Aimed to artists, programmers and groups working in new media or multimedia. Applicants must be EU residents. Their  line of production and research must ascribe to the following fields: mobile phones, locative media, augmented reality and social networks.


Workshop description:
The workshop will consist in the development of four artistic projects framed in the fields mentioned above.

A maximum of three projects will be chosen. A fourth project has benn selected from Vitrines i pantalles 2011 ACVic Centre d’Arts Contemporànies open call.

The workshop will have three mentors who will assist conceptually the projects to be developed, and the collaboration of volunteers. In addition three computer programmers will provide the technical support.
M.A.L. workshop seeks to create a space for exchanging knowledge to develop creative projects based on the fields mentioned earlier on this announcement.

The resultant projects will be presented to the public at the closure.

 

Objectives
– To create a workspace for reflection, research and exchange for the development of the selected projects.
– Development of specific software to create the projects or the adaptation of existing software tools.
– The methodologies and tools developed during the workshop will set up the conceptual basis and techniques for the future development of the Mobile Art Laboratory (M.A.L), newly created node in Hangar, Production and Research Centre for Visual Arts.

Place, term and schedules
The workshop will take place in Hangar, a Production and Research Centre for Visual Arts located in the Poblenou quater (Barcelona) from October 17th to October 21 of 2011. Hours to be decided.

Participation cathegories
There are two categories of participation:

1. Projects – CLOSED
Aimed to work on progress, or unreleased, art projects. The projects must circumscribe to one or more of the following research lines:
– Data dathering and attainment with mobile devices.
– Data retrieving.
– Locative Media.
– Augmented Reality.
– Audio and visual mapping .
– Community involvement.

A maximum of three projects will be selected in this mode.
 

2. Beta-testers
Aimed at individuals and groups interested to volunteer as beta-testers, testing and supporting the development of the projects selected in the mode1 Projects. However, participants selected in mode 1 Projects, may recommend their own volunteers.

– Personal information, name, surname, adress, e-mail, telephone number, date of birth and nacionality.
– letter of motivation.
– If applicable, record of professional experience.

 

Only applications submitted via Internet will be accepted. 

The deadline for applications is October 12th,  2011.

Evaluation criteria

1. Projects
– The adequacy of the project to the specific conditions of the workshop.
– The viability of the project on the terms specified in this announcement and the availability of technical resources and funding.
– The quality of the professional experience of the candidate, of his body of work and of the specific project presented.
– The submission of all documents and materials in the requested format.

2. Beta-testers
– The adequacy of the candidates motivation to the specific conditions of the workshop.
– The availability of the candidates during the workshop to carrying out tasks of beta-testing and co-operation with the development of the selected projects on mode 1 Projects.
 

Resolution

Results will be announced  to all the candidates via e-mail the firts week of August.

 

Terms and Conditions
– The applicants should fill out the online registration form no latter than the date specified on the deadline.
– Registration as well as workshop participation are free of charge.
– Hangar does not cover any cost derived from travel or lodging of the workshop participants.
– Participants of mode 1 Projects will receive € 100 per person as allowance. The selected groups within this category will receive the amount of € 100 euros per person for a maximum of three participants.
– The participants in the mode 2 (beta-testers) will not receive any allowance.
– The software developed during the workshop will be distributed under a Free Software license
– M.A.L. does not impose any type of license for the copyright management of the projects developed during the workshop. Each artistic project will have to find the appropriate copyright management license accordingly to the software used and in agreement with those collaborating in it.
– Hangar will provide catering service for the participants during the workshop.
– Hangar will not cover any other costs resulting from the production of selected projects.
– Wrong information submitted to the application will be cause of exclusion and, if necessary, the cancellation of the place granted.
– Participation in this competition implies acceptance of the rules and of the jury decition, as well as the acceptance of any changes made by Hangar resulting from unforeseen circumstances.
