Mariam Suhail was born in 1979, Rawalpindi, Pakistan and grew up in Islamabad. She completed her BFA from the Indus Valley School of Art and Architecture, Karachi (2001) and taught there as well as the School of Visual Arts and Design, Beaconhouse National University, Lahore between 2002 to 2008.

Mariam Suhail’s work stems from the incidental, undocumented minutia of conversations, mass-media, culture, and the everyday. She employs language from within these sources to dissect and re-present what may exist in the spaces between exchanges, ideas, historical events and daily occurrences, resulting in works in sculpture, video, digital images, text, drawing and books.

Her work was most recently included in The Missing One, Dhaka Art Summit (2016), All the World’s Futures, 56th Venice Biennale (2015), Minimal Forms of Reality, Bunkier Sztuki Gallery for Contemporary Art, Krakow (2015) and Constructs/ Constructions at the KNMA, Delhi (2015). Earlier she was part of Berlin Biennale – 8 (2014), Skoda Prize 2012 Exhibition, NGMA, New Delhi (2013), a triple feature at the Tilton Gallery, New York (2013) and Sites of Substance, National Art Gallery, Islamabad (2007). Solo exhibitions and projects include Sweet Subjunctive, GALLERYSKE, Delhi (2015/ 2016), Accidental Excavations, Grey Noise, UAE (2014), Brooding Protagonist, Discoveries, Art Basel Hong Kong (2013), Breakdown of Shorter Concerns (2011) and fig. 1. (2009), GALLERYSKE, Bangalore. She has been published in Shifter 21 – Other Spaces (2013) , Excursus – publication for Berlin Biennale – 8  and Take on Art, Sculpture issue, Jan 2014. She is a recipient of the Sharjah Art Foundation (SAF) 2016 Production Programme Grant for her ongoing book project with Raking Leaves. 

Mariam Suhail currently lives and works in Bangalore, India.
