Mariana De Matteis

Mariana De Matteis, Villaguay, Entre Ríos (Argentina) 1984

Period of resindece: June 2014

There is something of the photographic process, of lab work appearing in Mariana De Matteis job’s in some way or another. When it comes to drawings and paintings, light is an essential element to perceive the ensemble of the image. In some of her work, the images become somehow ghostly. This is because at first glance only certain elements are perceived, and depending on light influence and how the observer moves in front of each piece the drawing starts to appear. This gives her a similar feeling to that one of the magical moment when an image appears after a paper previously exposed to light is immersed in a developing liquid tray.

The instability of these representations in which everything can appear or disappear with only a small movement is the tension which her inquiries spin around.

In one of her latest projects ‘De Matteis Den Dauw Collection’, she asks herself how to build up a collection of artwork she cannot buy. A possible answer is that if she draws them, they belong to her. In this project she takes over the role of artist-collector who ‘gets’ other authors works of art to assemble her own collection, but drawn. Her plan includes artwork which she admires and wishes and that is able to be translated into lines.

Mariana is a graduate in Fine Arts with Theory and Critics orientation (National University of Rosario-2010). She went through different training experiences with Rafael Cippolini, Roberto Echen, Silvia Gurfein, Pablo Siquier and Eva Grinstein. She got scholarships from the Goethe Institut, the Fondo Nacional de las Artes, and the Nuevo Banco de Santa Fe and Nuevo Banco de Entre Ríosfoundations.
