Talk with Robertina Šebjanič

On February 21 at 7 p.m. Hangar presents Sounds of a troubled world’s = Underwater Interception of aquaforming, a talk with Robertina Šebjanič introduced by Laura Benítez Valero. At the meeting, presented as a moderated debate between the two, Robertina will present four of her series of works that will allow us to get to know her artistic practice, based on research and focused on the cultural, (bio)political and ecological realities of the human footprint in aquatic environments and its consequences / challenges.

In her series, she inquires the animal-machine-human relationships, regenerative medicine, inter-species communication (Aurelia 1+Hz), points out underwater noise pollution and its ecological consequences (Aquatocene) or illumates the invisible anthropogenic pharmaceutical chemical pollutants – residues of human consumption (Aqua_forensic). In her latest work in which she weaves together mythologies and sciences, history and future, fears and desires, continents, cultures, humans and non-humans – she folds and unfolds the stories carried by fascinating creatures that are the Mexican Axolotl and the Slovene Proteus in series Lygophilia.

 

Robertina Šebjanič works in the intersection of art, technology and science. Her work encompasses immersive installations, av performances, workshops that tackle philosophical questions of our society to the understanding of living systems and their interaction with the environment. Her ideas and concepts are often developed in collaboration with others, through interdisciplinary integration. She is a member of Hackteria Network and Theremidi Orchestra. She was awarded an Honorary Mention Prix Ars Electronica 2016, nomination for STARTS2016 and nomination for the White Aphroid award. She was SHAPE2017 artist.In 2018 she was selected into TOP5 artist of Universal Sea research: Pure or Plastic!? And was selected artist for residency at Ars Electronica in the frame of EMAP / EMARE.

Robertina is an internationally exhibited artist. She performed / presented / exhibited at solo and group exhibitions as well as in gallery’s, biennials, triennials and festivals: Ars electronica_Linz, Kosmica_Mexico City, Le Cube_Paris, Art Laboratory Berlin, Piksel_Bergen, Device art_Zagreb; Eastern Bloc_Montreal, Eyebeam_New York, PORTIZMIR#3_ Izmir, Kiblix festival_Maribor, Gallery Kapelica_Ljubljana … She studied at the Academy of Fine Arts and Design (SI),Famul Stuart School of Applied Arts (SI) and the Valand School of Fine Arts (SE).
