Hamaca

HAMACA is a platform for archiving, disseminating, and learning about contemporary audiovisual practices which articulate a wide network of cultural agents in the field of visual arts and experimental moving image. Constituted as a non-profit association, HAMACA’s mission focuses on preserving, distributing, and promoting video works and culture produced in Spain, within a national and international scope.

Created in 2005, it compiles the most representative productions from late 1960 to the present. Currently, the catalog safeguards more than a thousand titles of artists and filmmakers. New additions are selected on a biannual basis by a specialized jury of the video field and the visual arts through a public open call.

HAMACA looks after audiovisual heritage and its public transmission. Rooted in the interaction between video practices, uses of the media, and political research, the platform is committed to an expanded ecology of the medium, inhabiting open-source strategies towards a democratization of the archive.

Distribution comprehends cultural (exhibitions, screenings, etc), education, and social circuits, promoting dialogues between videography and expanded spheres. Therefore, HAMACA highlights the video medium as a tool of construction of the collective imaginary.

The wide nature of experimental video practices that inhabit HAMACA, encompass video art, non-fiction and social films, documentary and home movies. The archive is digital and mostly open in the online catalog and displays a wide interconnection between works through an experimental and rhizomatic system of tags.

Finally, from HAMACA we seek to generate an economic flow for artists, defending and contributing to fair remuneration and the professionalization of the contemporary audiovisual practices in our context.
