Paratext nº13 with Sylvia Winkler, Mariam Suhail, Anup Mathew Thomas, Carien Vugts, Grace Tume
Paratext hides a monthly schedule of presentations by artists in residency in Hangar, always on Wednesday from 7 pm to 9.30 pm. Several artists present in various formats specific projects or parts of their works. The meetings are always opened to the public in order to enable interaction with the artists themselves.

The artists will present their work:
Sylvia Winkler graduated from the Academy of Fine Arts in Stuttgart. Nearly all of her artistic practice she developed in collaboration with Stephan Köperl. During the last years she focussed on the research of political, urban and historical contexts which mostly resulted in song-lyrics, diagrams and drawings.
Sylvia and Stephan have shown their work internationally, including at the 7th Nippon International Performance Art Festival/Japan, the 3rd Shirjaewo-Biennale/Samara/RU, the Goethe Institute/Cairo and Montreal, Ex Teresa Arte Actual/Mexico D.F., Media Art Festival/Bangkok, Shang Elements Contemporary Art Museum Beijing, Shanghai East Asia Contemporary Gallery/Shanghai, Darling Foundry/Montreal, Upstairs Gallery/Kolkata, The Block/ Brisbane, Total Museum/South Korea, Sewon Art Space/Yogyakarta/Indonesia, MOCA Taipei and Pier 2 Art Center/Kaohsiun/Taiwan, as well as all over Europe.
Mariam Suhail was born in 1979, Rawalpindi, Pakistan and grew up in Islamabad. She completed her BFA from the Indus Valley School of Art and Architecture, Karachi (2001) and taught there as well as the School of Visual Arts and Design, Beaconhouse National University, Lahore between 2002 to 2008.
Mariam Suhail’s work stems from the incidental, undocumented minutia of conversations, mass-media, culture, and the everyday. She employs language from within these sources to dissect and re-present what may exist in the spaces between exchanges, ideas, historical events and daily occurrences, resulting in works in sculpture, video, digital images, text, drawing and books.
Her work was most recently included in The Missing One, Dhaka Art Summit (2016), All the World’s Futures, 56th Venice Biennale (2015), Minimal Forms of Reality, Bunkier Sztuki Gallery for Contemporary Art, Krakow (2015) and Constructs/ Constructions at the KNMA, Delhi (2015). Earlier she was part of Berlin Biennale – 8 (2014), Skoda Prize 2012 Exhibition, NGMA, New Delhi (2013), a triple feature at the Tilton Gallery, New York (2013) and Sites of Substance, National Art Gallery, Islamabad (2007). Solo exhibitions and projects include Sweet Subjunctive, GALLERYSKE, Delhi (2015/ 2016), Accidental Excavations, Grey Noise, UAE (2014), Brooding Protagonist, Discoveries, Art Basel Hong Kong (2013), Breakdown of Shorter Concerns (2011) and fig. 1. (2009), GALLERYSKE, Bangalore. She has been published in Shifter 21 – Other Spaces (2013) , Excursus – publication for Berlin Biennale – 8 and Take on Art, Sculpture issue, Jan 2014. She is a recipient of the Sharjah Art Foundation (SAF) 2016 Production Programme Grant for her ongoing book project with Raking Leaves.

Working primarily with photography, Anup Mathew Thomas’s works engage ostensibly local narratives, introducing audiences to stories that may have gone missing from the archive. Over the last decade he has produced a series of projects that engage with and make reference to the cultural history of his native Kerala. Predominantly working in series, his images offer access to microhistories and subcultures embedded in the seemingly everyday. He employs both anecdotal and factual narrative styles, and the work often culminates in carefully staged portraiture. In exploring the slippages between documentary and artistic practice, Thomas’s work is consistently in dialogue with the complexities of representation through the photographic image.
He lives and works in Bangalore, India. His participation in group exhibitions include Kochi Muziris Biennale, Kochi (2012); The Matter Within, Yerba Buena Center for the Arts, San Francisco (2011); Generation in Transition, Zacheta National Gallery of Art, Warsaw and the Contemporary Art Centre, Vilnius (2011-2012); The Self and the Other, La Virreina Centre de la Imatge, Barcelona and Artium, Centro-Museo Vasco de Arte Contemporaneo, Vitoria-Gasteiz (2009-10); Reflections of Contemporary India, La Casa Encendida, Madrid (2008) and Lapdogs of the Bourgeoisie, Arnolfini, Bristol (2009). He is a recipient of The Abraaj Group Art Prize 2014 and the Han Nefkens Foundation – BACC Award for Contemporary Art 2015.

Carien Vugts holds a degree in Fine Arts from the Academie voor Beeldende Vorming at Tilburg (The Netherlands) and a Master in Mixed Media from De Jan van Eyck Academie at Maastricht (The Netherlands). She lives and works in Utrecht (The Netherlands)
The work Carien Vugts currently realizes is part of a fictional universe, a universe that is getting more and more specific and which definitively should be imagined. She is chasing a remembrance of a location from her childhood that is encrypted with her memory. It is not an objective memory but one that is influenced by feelings and moods and still is subject to change. Like there is elsewhere another domain that should be mapped. Her visual archive is the heart of her visual language. It contains a lot of forms and structures derived from her fascination for wall covering materials and -motifs; such as plaster, wallpaper borders, motifs taken from wallpaper, motifs borrowed from stucco, decor strips, Delftware, etc. But it also contains drawings and photos of interiors, landscapes, still lives and shapes and structures derived from landscapes.
Through drawings, wall sculptures and site specific work, she reconstructs the location of her youth. Zooming in and out, these drawings, wall sculptures and installations are created. Formerly Carien Vugts considered the drawings, objects and site specific works as separate entities, now they are part of that one universe. The real significance lies in the relationship between these three. They are all part of a larger associative whole. You cannot see this intermediate area literally but you experience it because this too is animated. Each work has its own eloquence but together they form the visual language with which Vugts want to construct and communicate.
Vugts will start with visiting DIY shops, wall paper stores, and so on. With the new materials she hopes to find, she will realize new wall sculptures. This process will be influenced by staying in Barcelona for these two months.
Gran parte de su familia es del norte peruano, del pueblo de Cabo Blanco, lugar donde ha vivido la mitad de su infancia. Luego de terminar la etapa escolar, decidió estudiar pintura con la idea de continuar lo único que gozó en el colegio: dibujar y colorear. Realizó los estudios universitarios en la Pontificia Universidad Católica del Perú (PUCP), en el segundo año cambió su especialidad a escultura. Culminó su carrera en el 2013, los dos últimos años con el Premio Winternitz como al primer puesto de la promoción. Del 2011 al 2012 realizó el programa de intercambio a la Universitat de Barcelona. En la primera etapa del 2011 tomó cursos optativos en la PUCP dentro de ellos los más importantes de su carrera: quechua, cerámica y fotografía análoga.
Al finalizar sus estudios en el 2013 encontró un panorama muy pesado de lidiar como artista: poco dinero, difícil acceso al mundo del arte y una sensación de pérdida económica para la gran inversión hecha en su carrera. Consciente de la confianza depositada por parte de su padre en su talento como artista, decidió no renunciar.
Durante el 2013 se dedicó a trabajar en otros rubros desligados al mundo del arte. Finalmente, siguiendo el ejemplo y consejo de su padre, empezó a ser independiente y emprender un negocio paralelamente a su profesión. Actualmente se encuentro a cargo de una cochera para empresas de transporte en la Provincia Constitucional del Callao, Perú. Lo cual la ayudó a seguir invirtiendo en su producción artística a un ritmo propio bajo su auspicio.
