“Rarefacció is the reduction of the density of a medium, the opposite of compression. It can also refer to an area of relatively low pressure that follows a sound wave”.
Hangar presents the fifth edition of Rarefacció, a listening cycle that takes place in Hangar’s Sala Ricson and concludes in Sala VOL, as part of the Audio Formal/Politics of Listening research line.
This year, Rarefacció continues to offer a programme made up of local artists with other practices within the clubbing scene, moving between styles such as ambient or more abrupt electronic music such as noise or industrial sound.
Anne Gillis and Suso Saiz will open and close the daytime programme respectively. It is a pleasure to programme these artists, who have been an integral part of the international scene for decades. Sala Ricson will also host the Amiga project, a live performance by SN Systema and vocal synthesis exercises by Laringe, oscillator.
We will also be able to enjoy other ways of understanding djing with the narrative expansions of las lindas pobres as well as the neo-psychedelic sessions of T. Modet.
But Rarefacció is not all about music; Silvia Zayas will present her audiovisual work in video format where underwater recordings reveal life in the sea of Barcelona.
As usual, we don’t want to leave the programme without female creators who use their own instruments. Genoveva Genocide will land from the Basque Country to break many of the established patterns using primary materials such as iron. We will also be able to see and listen to Gamelan Barasvara, who perform indigenous sounds from Bali or Java with metallophones, xylophones and gongs – to name but a few – in a musical experience that is generated from the collective in the sonic, accompanied by their traditional dance.
We will keep the closing night of the show in the Poblenou neighbourhood in the venue VOL, where we can listen to the new project Strawberry Lime, who act as selectors of Techno gems; to Rumbler dj, who brings together in his sessions sounds that cross styles such as Continuum Hardcore, Ghetto music or House. Finally, we hope that the Colombian dj based in Barcelona, Gatasanta, will wear out your soles with her suitcase full of Electro and detroit sounds from then and now.
The range is wide, and that is how we want Rarefacció to continue to be: a series of perspectives within sound creation, far apart from each other, but with certain links in terms of contexts and moments.
The image of the festival is the work of Diego Bustamante of Oficina de disseny. For this edition, we wanted to focus the image of the exhibition on the graphic representation of sound. To do this, we looked at examples from different periods in which different authors, far removed from the academic tradition, created their own graphic systems to execute the pieces.
Rarefacció 2024 counts on the collaboration of Monkey Energy Drinks, which continues to accompany us in this edition, expanding the possibilities of the exhibition.
