Cavernes+Artzart. Fine Art students at Cosmocaixa

From the 3rd to the 15th of May 2011 in Cosmocaixa. Official finissage on Saturday 14th of May (Museum Night).

During the months of April, May, and June of 2011, a group of students from the Fine Art faculty from the University of Barcelona will be developing a group project at CosmoCaixa, with the aim of thinking about science by applying personal methodologies and strategies that question it. The project is divided into two different lines of work: Cavernas and Artzart.

The project is divided into two different lines of work: Cavernas and Artzart.

Cavernes is not a critique, but rather a change of outlook that reviews the myth of Plato’s cavern within the space of the Cosmocaixa museum – a space where the viewer enters looking for answers, looking for truth- in order to give rise to paradoxes, and an antagonist. These answers, however, are nothing more than shadows that others have discovered in their search for certainty. We invite you to enter the cavern, to look for an unfathomable truth. A space where the myths of exactitude and scientific authenticity reign, and where you are left half way whilst trying to find it, full of obstacles and shadows.

Artzart are two interventions within the museum space that deal with the idea of chance, taken as a contingency, circumstance, accident, that is to say, as something that is unpredictable. All that is unexpected is excluded from the pieces of this science museum, where everything has been measured and calculated so that the interaction with the viewer, who presses a button, yields the same results of a "scientific experiment" every time. We would like for the intervention of the viewer to be the main driving force. The intervention of hundreds of participants in the same process will make the result be highly organic and unexpected. The fluctuation of the viewers’ movement will make up a "whole" and the result will be highly arbitrary. A specific programme to present the results of these projects in Cosmocaixa has been created to coincide with Museum Night.
