Gathered on December 21 and 24, 2021, the jury formed by Lucía Egaña Rojas, Giuliana Racco (artist and member of the Program Committee) and Anna Manubens (director of the AAVC Private Foundation-Hangar), has decided to select the following artists for Hangar long-term residences that will start in May 2022:
Valentina Alvarado Matos y Carlos Vásquez Méndez
Luz Broto
Paula García-Masedo
María García Ruiz
Violeta Mayoral
Txe Roimeser
Marta Velasco Velasco
The jury has also awarded a special mention to the following artists:
Yosman Botero, Mariana Echevarri, Andy Gracie and Nathaniel Mann, Katharina Stadler y Mariam Suhail.
Although it may seem a standard formality, the jury wishes to highlight the unusual quality of the applications received. A total of 67 applications were received, in order to fill seven available positions.
We would like to thank all the candidates for the hard work of preparing the dossiers and the vital energy to be projected in a place, as well as the trust they have placed in Hangar by wanting to become part of their inhabitants, users and network of communities and complicities.
Taking this into account, and given that it is not possible for us to give an individualized feedback, we share below a summary of the criteria that we used in the decision-making process.
We assessed the practices, backgrounds or dispositions that demonstrated a knowledge of the particularities of Hangar as a center for research and artistic production. Either because the work puts into play interests, techniques or technologies that will find in Hangar handles and accompaniments that are especially relevant to them; or because the candidatures made explicit the will -or implicitly carried a capacity- to nurture and intervene in the Hangar environment, including its services, its methodologies, its lines of research and its ways of being, of insisting and resisting in the world in general.
We have also taken into consideration the moment in which the artists find themselves when presenting their candidacy. What they have accomplished so far, what they intend to do and the coherence, solidity and state of maturity of their current processes in relation to the previous ones. In this sense, we have also valued the fact that the research that currently animates the artists’ work intersects with the urgencies of the moment we are living or those that we at Hangar would like to tackle.
We have taken into account that locally, in Barcelona, there are many opportunities for residencies and accompaniment for emerging practices, but there are comparatively few for “mid-career” artists and beyond.
In addition, Hangar residencies are thought collectively in order to form a whole in which different paths and methodologies converge (among the artists already in Hangar and those who will be added now) . We have pursued the diversity of situations and approaches also attending to practices that do not come from circuits or spaces of artistic centrality.
We understand that the elaboration of proposals, their requirements and style are a technique and we have also tried to pay attention to forms of self-presentation that use other registers or codes.
Finally, we have taken into account the degree of desire or urgency that is transparent in the elaboration of the dossier and its different elements.
We wish there had been more places available. Many thanks again to all the applications, it has been a pleasure to read them.
