Paratext feat. Encura V

This name, Paratext, hides a monthly program of performances by artists in residence at Hangar as well as artists on exchange grants. They present, in different formats, specific projects or parts of their work. The sessions are always open to the public with the purpose of enabling interaction with the artists themselves. Each Paratext also has an editor who will later publish his or her impressions of the presentation on this blog. On this occasion, Teresa López Pellisa will be the editor.

The next session of Paratext will take place on Wednesday, June 2 at 7 pm in the Sala Ricson at Hangar. On this occasion, Núria Gómez Gabriel will present the project Iban oscuro por entre las sombras, developed within the framework of the Encura V grant.

Núria Gómez Gabriel is a researcher in the field of communication and contemporary visual culture. Her practice crosses critical pedagogies, writing and curatorship.

In general terms, her interests focus on observing how power imaginaries are configured and the relationship they have with the ways in which technology materializes memory. More specifically, in 2016 she began an investigation into Gothic materialism in current artistic, literary and philosophical practices. This research attempts to analyze and situate the psychological and visual tropes of horror as liminal figures rooted in a desire: to open up speculative narratives and symbolic spaces that reformulate the ruins of geopolitical pasts ungraspable in the present, and that propose alternatives to the present time in which we have been trapped.

Throughout the months of January-March 2021, Núria Gómez Gabriel has carried out her curatorial research project Iban oscuro por entre las sombras within the framework of the Encura V grant, organized by Hangar, La Casa Encendida and hablarenarte. A collective exploration device that has been deployed through three days of nightly coexistence with artists Ángela Millano and Blanca G. Terán (aka dj_Sônia), Raquel G. Ibáñez, Andrea González, Elif Özbay, Ana Llurba, Raisa Maudit, Marian Garrido, Paco Chanivet and Colectivo Juan De Madre that has investigated speculative practices and methodological processes around gothic materialism today. These three days of coexistence – held at Sala Ricson in Hangar (Barcelona), a farmhouse in Plandogau (Lleida) and at Planta Alta (Madrid) – have created a place for the exchange of knowledge and imaginaries as a starting point to create, collectively, an open source encyclopedia from a perspective close to theory-fiction. In this context also the Legends of the Geogothic is born, a podcast in 6 installments that collects some of their explorations and that is proposed as an opening to the research process.
