Hangar Obert 2024

On Saturday 28 and Sunday 29 September, Hangar’s resident artists and projects will open their doors to show their work, production and research processes.

Throughout the two days, you will be able to attend talks, performances, screenings and interventions, organised by resident artists and projects, as well as by the centre’s different lines of research and accompaniment. Each day will end with a festive programme and DJ sets. In addition, Kantina Migrante will be present with its food stalls on both days.

This year, the Hangar Obert 2024 poster, designed by artist-in-residence Oriol Arnedo and printed by resident project Lumbung Press, will be available to all attendees.

Mover la pared al ancho de mi puerta by Luz Broto
The artist’s intervention consists of shifting one of the walls of her studio, thus modifying the equal distribution of 30 m² per studio/artist, resulting in a reduction of her studio space to a corridor the width of the door, as well as a significant enlargement of the adjacent studio. This proposal coincides with the last months of her two-year residency at Hangar, being presented at Hangar Obert and extending until the end of her residency.

Fun Palace 2022 (16:47´) by Huaqian Zhang (Soundtrack for Arnau Sala Saez)
Fun Palace 2022 is an update of Fun Palace 2020, a temporary architecture essay at the time of the apocalypse. This new version proposes modifying how we think of ourselves after the collapse through an imaginary that moves away from anthropocentrism and erases the boundaries between individuals. The aim is to represent the collective unconscious through imagination and a revision of individualism, enabling an audiovisual universe that belongs to everyone and no one.

1 ola majestic en mi balconee (11′) by tacoderaya (Paula Pérez-Roda & Jonás de Murias)
The landscapes of the Mediterranean real estate bubble. Towers mixed with sand and water, blurring their urbanism. 1 ola majestic en mi balconee speculates on the resistance of late-capitalist leisure forms in the context of climate disasters, working on the fictional and hallucinatory distance of the hyperproduction of the capitalist self: I walk through the landscapes of a dystopia that might perhaps take me on a trip. I see, at last, a synthesis of the climate disaster experience – one that will not present itself, is not already presenting itself, with epic distance, emotional mystery, or the possibility of blaming someone else.

25th Anniversary: Decora-Chan!8 by Equipo Jeleton (1 h)
Music and images to resurrect the Decora-Chan!7 party that took place at Hangar in 2004.

5 asaltos al Estado (70′), Hamaca + Daniel Gasol
There is a need to react against a system, to attack a reality that constrains life. Perhaps, only by destroying the supposed “security” can we demoralize a State that seeks to anesthetize us. Perhaps, only then can we defend ourselves. The selection of works presented highlights 5 ways of assaulting gender, the media, labor, the concept of property, history, libertarian culture, and political action, allowing us to reflect on the obligation of life and the choice to exist in other ways. Among the selected works are Cortos by Els 5QK’S, El striptease de mi abuela by Maria Llopis, Jolonque by Abel Jaramillo, and Querida A by Elena Molina. Additionally, the session proposes a final screening, this time from home, available at hamacaonline.net: El taxista ful by Jo Sol. This screening program presents some of the latest pieces added to the Hamaca archive.

Magical Theys by Alícia Arévalo (20′)
Magical Theys is a project that reflects on non-binary gender through magical fictions, drawing inspiration from Magical Girls anime. The intention is to reimagine the archetype of “the knight” as a speculation imagined from a queer perspective. To achieve this, armor and transparent, ornamented, vulnerable, flexible, fragile, hybrid garments will be activated, through Drag king practices and fencing choreographies, to shape deviant corporalities that exceed binaries.

Language: Spanish
It is not possible to leave the room once the performance has started.

Trumpets of the Dead by Jose Begega (45′)
An autobiographical journey through experiences that have shaped the artist’s identity and reflect an entire structure of systemic violence that erases, expels, and punishes dissidence within the traditional family, the schoolyard, the work environment, public and private space, or the psyche itself. In an attempt to expand the sound capacity of her body, to flee from conventional narratives, and to ensure that words are not her only narrative language, Jose Begega dances and creates a musical or sound-amplifying instrument that multiplies her limbs and body orifices, resonating the joints, nerves, cartilage, or blood vessels she had to develop to survive in a world that consciously guided her to death, and which now manifest as phantom limbs.

Unknown Unknowns by Oriol Arnedo Casas (30′)
Unknown Unknowns (2020) is a post-factual documentary-style film that explains, through archival footage and synthetically generated material, how a series of events over the past decades has led to the current version of our world. In an era where the distinction between reality and fiction is becoming increasingly blurred, the rise of new technologies, such as AI-generated deepfakes, is redefining traditional standards of truth and reality, making us question whether widely accepted formats are reliable sources for interpreting the realities around us.

TSA 004: Todo pasa, y lo efímero permanece de Carmen Westermeier & Julia Hainz
TSA 004 is a performative articulation in 3 parts. The artist duo Julia Hainz and Carmen Westermeier from Germany have been working on their ongoing research project The Symbiotic Approach (TSA) at Hangar since the beginning of September as part of a two-month residency. They adopted the term symbiosis, which in biology stands for the coexistence of several individuals that is beneficial to all. In their performative practice, they transfer this idea to the interaction between their two bodies, whose symbiosis is mediated through the use of various media. For Hangar Obert, they use their method to activate in-between spaces on the site, thereby challenging normative patterns of perception on body and space.
